Hydro turf Help!

Just finished up the footholds,
Whats a good trick to install the hydro turf/cutting it out?
Its just a large sheet, I have the glue but i am a little stumped with the curve at the top of the gunwales and how i should make my cuts

Anyone with non stock turf installed post any close up pics please?IMG_0618.JPG IMG_0627.JPG IMG_0628.JPG IMG_0618.JPG IMG_0627.JPG IMG_0628.JPG

Hope this helps.... Do yourself a favor, do not used Dap contact cement. Go to home depot and look in the laminate counter top section. They have wilsonart 500 commercial contact cement. since I switched I have never had a pc of turf peel up or come loose!

Is it the same operation: glue both sides, wait, stick it right the first time?

You want to use paper or something to make a template first. When you lay the turf it is easiest to warm it up in the dryer or with a hair blower first so it stretches and dries the glue quicker.

I cut Rough templates for most of my pcs. My templates for the tray are never an exact fit. I always leave 1/8 - 1/4" on all sides. This allows you to trim it after its stuck down just incase it doesn't wind up where you exactly wanted it. For the gunwales I also cut templates again leaving extra material. I start at the turf I already put down in the tray and work my way up and out. Once Everything is stuck all the way out to the body lines I use a single edge razor blade to final trim everything. I never use a razor blade to cut more than 4-6 " of turf. I am constantly changing to a new blade.
Wilsonart 500 works same way as any contact cement. 1 coat on each surface and let dry. 2nd coat on each let dry until it won't string on your finger and then bond pcs. Gotta learn sooner or later !!!! Get to turfing!!!

Quinc is correct, heat is your friend but use a hair dryer not a heat gun. Also you are warming it to make it form easier, not heating it to get it to stretch. If you heat to much it stretches out gets real thing and the pattern distorts.

the only time i've ever separated turf was by ripping it out during a crash.

buy the pre cut turf saves you time

I guess it depends which pre-cut.

I bought the kit from hydroturf for digger footwells.. What a horrible mistake, thankfully I bought a full sheet at the same time as well... There was literally not one piece that was usable in that kit... As I finished up I thought.. "at least I should be able to use the dash piece"
Nope! The notch for the hood latch was off by almost an inch and a half.

DAP Weldwood in the red can is fine. The key is patience. Based on the pics of your foothold install, your turf will come out great, as those pics show you take pride in your work and took your time to do it right.
