Hyperfiber: A pre-preg that sets up with 5 min of uv exposure

Have you guys heard of this yet? There is an article about it in the new Hotrod magazine. I can't find many details on it yet, but it seems to be some sort of pre-preg frp that sets up with exposure to UV light (ie no autoclave). Better yet, it only takes a matter of minutes to do so and pot life if infinite as long as you keep it away from uv. They also have a version with wire in it to hold any shape you bend it to that allows for a mold-less construction. I don't see this being used to make hulls or anything, but it seems this could be pretty handy for smaller parts or possibly prototyping.

Really cool but really expensive! Summit Racing has it for $76 for a 12"x60" piece ($15 a square foot). The actual site is $205 for a 12"x21' piece ($10 a square foot). Both are 16oz fiberglass. 18oz fiberglass weave from uscomposites is $1 a square foot but you have to buy resin. 19oz carbon fiber twill from uscomposites is $4.50 a square foot plus resin.

To have an instant repair at Daytona or something, it'd be worth it to continue riding the rest of the day. That's about it though. Too expensive for everyday use.

Madmat's ebay link has it for just over $8.50 /sft delivered if you buy 10 sft. This is pre-preg though, I don't think it's fair to compare it to buying glass and resin separate. Plus you can get it with those wires woven in. That alone is a pretty useful feature for prototyping/one-offs that I haven't seen before.

I agree though, that this isn't just going to take over the market or anything but I certainly can see some good applications for it.

There use to be some UV activated Polyster Body Filler years ago. Also Solareez made a fibreglass repair kit that came in a tube, you just squirt it out like toothpaste and spread. It would fill a hold but not really structural.

I just saw fiberglast.com has pre-preg 9oz fiberglass at about $4.50 / sft in a similar quantity. So this hyperfiber is about twice the amount even through the ebay link but how much is an autoclave? lol

This stuff is expensive for sure, but I think it's just fantastic for quick repairs. I would gladly pay that to have a piece in my toolkit for those emergency freeride moments. How great would it be to have your ski floating again in next to no time?

first off is it going to adhere and be compatible with the current layup of your hull. second what if you live in ohio where the sun never shines. third who cares about the price. time is money if you can get an entire layup done in a day with no mess instead of a week of work on a project the price would be worth saving me time.

uv rays go through clouds
Clouds block visible light, but visible light is only a small fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum. Ultraviolet light has smaller wavelengths than visible light, so it passes through clouds.

Percy's has a light you can buy for this and I think there are generic bulbs readily available that put out uv as well. Isn't that what you use to grow, errrrrrr, flowers and whatnot indoors?
