Before

I finally got the Vengeance Boat done and I have been tuning the motor the last couple weeks. I have been dealing with small issues, like the Nynja Pipe
popping off due to my install, figuring out jetting etc. Yesterday I got everything figured out on the jetting on the low and the top seemed good, but I couldn't do a plug reading due to the area I was riding. I was going to go to a different landing to tune the main jet in. I set the wet pipe were Art said to set it (3/8 on the bottom screw, mid and top closed). Being that the low jetting was close, I wanted to mess with the top screw, so I gave 1/16" of a turn just to see what will happen. I got some jerkeyness on the bottom. It kind of sounded different so I kept messing with the throttle. I ended up half way out on the lake and go to turn and slid sideways and fell off. I come up from the water look and see my ski going down. When I fell I must of hit the hood and it popped off. I was messing so much with the jetting and pipe I probably didn't strap the hood right and I have no hood hooks. I am freaking right now, so the hull is bobbing vertically and i am halfway across the lake. I start dragging it in to shore by hand, 15 minutes later i get it closer to shore, hull still bobbing. Finally the hull stops bobbing, I was in about 13' of water at this point and kept dragging the ski, trying to keep the ski up to the surface, getting closer to the landing. I see two boats drive right passed me, two other fisherman were casting their lures towards me, I'm like you have to be kidding me. So finally I'm about 40 feet from the landing and the front of the boat was stuck in the mud. Another 50 minutes goes by and I can't move it. Finally I saw a non fisher guy and yell, "hey, can you do me a favor?", i talk this guy in to dragging close to shore, so I can drag it by hand to the landing. I haven't been scared in a long time. I wasn't letting go of that boat, I worked so hard for that thing this year.

So, I got the motor cleaned/ carbs cleaned out and got the motor running. I ended up losing my hood, I definitely need hood hooks. If anybody has any advice on home made hood hooks, it would be appreciated. I did meet a guy who dives at the landing that may help me out today. Hopefully I can find the hood, but doubtful. I am glad I added the foam and that the boat floats tray up pretty long, unfortunately I learned the hard way. I did put my SXR hood on and it fit, so at least i can keep tuning.

As far as how the boat handles, it is really light but it is going to take some getting used to. I do like the boat a lot, it jumps real easy. I had to seal around some of the penetrations other then that I kept the water out pretty good (when the hood is on). I was getting a little water under the hood, but not much. The hardest part for me is when the hull nose rides straight up and how it purpoises (no sure how to spell that), it is away different ride compared to my sxr. Also the forward handle pole positioning is a lot different feeling too, for people that are beginners like me. So that is my story, I hope no one has to go through the same situation, If you go with the hull, I would recommend adding some hood hooks, keep the hood tight and make sure your strap doesn't slip.

I just got off the lake with the diver and no luck on finding the hood, but that is expected. I went down in about 20 ft of water, thank God i have my ski. I would definitely recommend putting foam in the tray if you don't have any. It gave me about 15-20 minutes of buoyancy, just enough time to drag it to shallower water by myself. I'll use this as a learning experience. I'll be ordering a new hood and make sure that I make a habit securing the hood a lot better, even if I'm just testing.

So this ski has no hood hooks or a hood seal? Try a longer ride plate to get that nose down or do you have to use the plate the hull builder made?

straight cash homie
They've got a hood seal but no hooks. I run a ratchet strap from jetmaniac and it seams to be doing the trick. I've been toying with the idea of trying to find a hood pin setup like what's on the wdk envys and put the latch on the back. But I'm sure thoes pin systems are almost next to impossable to find. On the ride plate you should be able to use another sxr plate and cut it down to the leingth that suits you best.

How does this happen to a tank, I had it strapped in good? Also the trim cable broke too, it's only been used a couple weeks. It must of been from when I pulled it in to shore. I don't know what I did in life, but I must of done something.

yeah, it runs up the handle pole. Do you think in was from the pressure when submerged? I know when I pulled the carbs the lines made a pressure sound. Not heavy, but noticeable.

I did run it yesterday with out the hood. I might just do the crank seals at this point. I'm sure if that tank pushed in the seals are toast. I did pull the domes off last night and the pistons and cylinders looked pretty good. Thanks for the help, I wouldn't of thought of that.

crazy that you cant spot a white hood in 20ft of water, must be mirky?

tip for the ratchet straps. dont pull them tight then ratchet it down. leave the strap loose, and ratchet it in. this will give it more bite and it wont come off like yours. im guessing it just had a light grip on the strap.

yep, I pulled them tight. There isn't much visibility down there, I think the hood probably drifted somewhere. You look down on Lake Waconia and it is like 3 to 5 foot visibility unfortunately. Thanks for the tip on the straps, I will be doing that.

Steve from Trendsetterz/ Backie Chan guy can get you the hood pin set up. It's what he includes on all the Chans.

btw, amazing story. Glad you got it back and everything.

Dave,

Let me know if you need any help pressure testing the motor. I have a test plug that fits into the factory pipe coupler so you don't have to pull the entire exhaust system apart.

I'll PM you my number.

Eric.

Man I'm glad that story ended the way it did. Too many guys loosing their skis.

As for the hood, I discovered my Matrix hood would not float on one of my very first rides. Thankfully it was only in a couple feet of water and was able to get it back. I pulled my breather tubes and inserted a couple pieces of foam between the shells and now it floats for days. I used that black 1/2" pipe foam/insulation in mine. It doesn't take much to float it and a 6ft piece, ($1.64) is enough for a couple hoods.
