Super Jet Ideas to loosen the through hull fitting on a SJ steering cable for change out

Location
Houston
Doing my winter inspection and this year my steering cable has worn through and needs to be replaced. It's my first attempt at a steering cable replacement. i've got the handle pole off - and was planning to pull the cable out the back of the ski -- but, I cannot get to the through hull fitting by the pump. Is there a trick here or do I need to drop the pump to get at the fitting?

Pics of the steering cable and the fitting I'm talking about. Thanks for any input!

There is a tool out there that you can buy but can’t think who it is that makes it. You can get the nut off with a pair of channel locks but it’s just a pita to get to.

However, here is a tool you can make. Measure the size of the nut and get a 2’ piece of schedule 40 pvc pipe that is slightly smaller than the nut. Heat up the end of the pipe and slide it over the nut so it forms the shape of the nut. When it cools down you can then remove the nut. That’s what I did to remove the VTS nut on my Seadoo which is hard to get to just like the through hull fitting on a Yamaha.

Here's that tool mike mentioned. Also the cables pulls thru from engine bay to remove. Also once you get the nut off there is a hooked plastic split washed lock, you'll need to open and remove. Just pic it open from the side opposite the hing point to open it. Sealing the cable into the thru hull tube is a cone shaped plug adound the cable. I pushed my cable slightly back toward the pump to start lodgeing it loose and sprayed with w-d 40, pretty tight in there.

I have use channel lock pliers and crescent wrenches with the pump still installed. But if the fitting starts spinning you can wedge it with a large flathead.

27mm socket welded to a length of tube that passes over the section of steer cable protruding from retaining nut, (basically made a super deep well socket) I drilled out the 1/2” square drive to open the hole up to change 6mm couch cables too. By welding a junk 3/8 drive socket on the end it allows it to be ran with a ratchet but usually can just spin it by hand, it’s just a plastic nut. Can change a steer cable in a few minutes. Use a shallow 27 mm and you can start the nut without needing to even drop the ride plate or water lines.

I made a bunch of these for Seadoo's but I can make some for the Yamaha size too. Only have a few thousand feet of it here at work. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Once you have the nut off, replace it with a toilet connector and save yourself the headache when you need to remove at a later date. The toilet connector has wings on it that helps with tightening and loosening! Hope this helps!
