When I put an MSD in my boat I just lined up the marks on the stator and case. The timing was advanced a little before that. I've read that you can still run a few degrees advance with an MSD. How do you measure say 3 degrees advance timing? There aren't any other marks to go by, and my Clymer's manual doesn't help any.

There are three marks. The center indicates TDC, the closer mark indicates 3 deg ATDC, and the further one marks 5 degrees BTDC. Line it up between center and the 5 deg mark.

I don't remember there being any other marks when I had the flywheel off before. I'm gonna tear into it tomorrow and wanted to ask before I had it apart. Thanks for the quick response.

I only have one mark on the case. There's one mark on the stator and two little bumps on the stator that you can see in the pics. Do I rotate the stator clockwise or counter clockwise to advance timing? I don't want to screw this up and deto the motor. I do have some WOT runs up the lake sometimes too.

See how the top mark on the stator is further away from the center than the other? That's your 5 degree advance mark.
Line up the mark on the case right between that 5 degree mark and the center mark, and you should be good.

Counter clockwise advances timing. I personally would pass on running any additional advance on pump gas. Especially if you run WOT often.

I agree, why take the chance? Your already getting an advantage on the curve with the MSD

So the way it's setup now it's retarded a couple degrees??? That's the way it was when I got the ski. This is a 6m6 motor, and I also have a milled head with around 180psi. I thought I read somewhere that higher comp and advanced timing wasn't too bad on these because of the port timing.

Just thought I would add a little more info for future reference.

Make sure the flywheel teeth is flush with the case before you put the cover back on. :banghead: Also, make sure the flywheel teeth is flush with the case before you put the tank back in. :banghead: Lastly, make sure the flywheel teeth is flush with the case before you put the battery tray back in. :banghead:

If the flywheel isn't flush with the case the bendix won't hit it, and your ski sounds like a blender when you try to start it.

Id like to experiment with how advanced you could run a 650 motor.

since the stock exh ports are so small.

advance the timing, MSD,compression, pipe, and light flywheel.

might be a monster out of the hole.

Man, that sucks.
Look on the bright side, you might not even have to use the flywheel pull to get it off this time AND you will be a pro at pulling everything back out!
Hopefully you did not damage anything like bendix, flywheel teeth, or woodruff key on tip of the crank.

I have an MSD, Coffman pipe, groupk milled head, and lightened flywheel. I just put it back to stock since I'm gonna sell this motor. The timing was way off before. Need to get the 701 together instead of trying to milk more power out of the 650. I do have some extra 701 pistons that I was thinking about using in the 650. Bore it, and port it with the Race logic templates I have. That's a whole nother can of worms I don't have time for though.

I am a pro now!!! I can get the flywheel out in about 10 minutes with air tools. I do put it back together with a torque wrench so I wouldn't break anything. I didn't damage anything. I just need to take my time when workin on this thing.
