i just installed a new impeller in my Octane and now there is a noise in the pump. i checked all the bolts and i know the pump is installed correctly. does anyone know what this could be?

It's common to discover a swollen wear ring with a new prop. If it's been swelling for a while a prop will actually grind itself down to accommodate the swelling. A shiny new prop of the right diameter will catch and make a noise (or, worst case, seize the pump).

it did spin freely when it was out of the drive line. i havent had it in the water yet so the sound is when its out. i hope it doesnt seize the pump. why would it swell up?

The housing is made from aluminum and the liner is made from stainless steel. Any time two dissimilar metals meet there will be corrosion between them. When that happens in this case the corrosion causes a swelling and the inly thing that can move is the liner, inwards.

You can normally see the scuff marks if this is what's happening, and you can definitely feel the swelling if you run your hands over the interior.

The octane pump is entirely stainless, no stainless liner inside a casting. Did the impeller shaft some how move? prop could be rubbing on the hub, or it's hitting the wear ring under power.

Hmmm.. OK, sorry: I didn't realize the Octane pump was stainless. in that case is less likely that you have any swelling. So that points to the bearing.

when i had the pump off the bearing was great, it spun nice, and no grabbing of anything at all. ill try it out tomorrow in the water and see how it does after a little riding on it.

no because the impeller fits in the pump with none of the impeller exposed outside of it. there is also a rubber O-ring between the pump and the housing.

Does the prop overhang the stator at all? I once had an SJ prop out-of-round that would brush the stator where it overhang. It spun all right, but you could feel it if you were trying to.
