Custom/Hybrid Input on Gen3 BOB

Hey guys,

New account, not new to the X though. I'm considering ordering a gen3 fiberglass bob hull. I wanted some first hand accounts/opinions. I'd be mainly using on flat water with occasional surf when the waves are good in Galveston.

Main question is, would this be a good all around ski for rec riding? I grew up on an fx1 and an old 550 so I'm fairly accustomed to the smaller hulls. I plan on having a fairly modded 701 in it til I can afford anything bigger.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Generally speaking, all of these hulls are shorter and fatter than a FX1/550. You can overcome being too short with a shorter pole or a little down trim on the nozzle. Watch out for a completely rockered bottom, this is makes flatwater backflips easy but makes the hull porpoise at higher speeds. If riding fast is important then aviod hulls with rear rocker.

Okay, that wouldn't be too important. Most of the time I just cruise about looking for boat wakes on the lake. Our fx is unstable at high speed so I don't do too many fast runs anywho. These type of hulls tend to ride nose high also it seems, so I wasn't expecting much speed as much as tricks and flips.

I have a house in your area and ride the bayous and surfside. I have had a few A/M hulls. I would suggest a ROK. Great all around REC ski that does everything well. Get a "hot" 800 in it and it will flatwater backflip, stable at speed, carves good and is really fun in the surf. 84" long overall and SXR based. Just my 2 cents since I am familiar with the water conditions there.

I had a gen 2 and gen 3. gen 3 was a nice hull and i would recommend it for sure, definitely over a ROK lol. You can even get a long plate if you find the short one a little too nose happy. I sold my gen 3 to a guy that barely rode skis at all and he was comfortable on the ski right away the first ride. You sound like you know how to ride and dont mind an aggressive ski that can huck as opposed to a ski thats gunna cruise around on plane.

Here we go. Why not list some of the attributes of said hull like the OP asked for? First time I've heard anyone use he term "aggressive" to describe it,I think available would be a better term to use since there is usually no shortage of low hour barely used ones for sale. OP would like a nice capable "rec" hull from what I gathered, which the ROK. And since you are so familiar with the conditions he will be riding in lets here why? I think Kevbo and I gave good info, you the standard answer. Take a trip and ride one OP and make sure it suits your purpose, you might be surprised. OP good luck and have fun.

I'd love to try any of these skis out. Problem is finding someone willing to let me in the area. I haven't looked into the Rok much, so I'll have to see about those as well. All I know is I'd like to get something that doesn't require a huge motor to be able to toss around.

Chan might not be bad since Steve says its based on the ROK and with the tubbies added in would be a plus. I didn't bring it up because the OP is right by the surf and no one has had a Chan in the surf that I know of. Also the Chan being 7" shorter and rockered front and rear might hurt it a little in the surf compared to the ROK. Definitely a possible choice and could be considered I think.

Personally, after having tubbies on both my stand ups I almost would rather not have too much width. I guess I somewhat feel at home on something more unstable than something overly stable. I had a superjet for a while and hated it. It felt like a couch compared to what I normally rode. Seven inches is a big difference though so I could see that being a slight problem.

What about an EME Micro then? Tiny

Still wider than a SJ. All those a/m hulls have stability, pop, and 'flippability' in mind. None are narrower than their base designs. (Except F1 Pro I guess)

OP: With what you said about your riding preferences, you really MUST ride these hulls first. A BOB (and many others) are the exact opposite of what you're after.

I had seen those. I'm not sure if that would work, might be too small lol. I guess I can't say much as far as tubbies considering I've only ever rode my two. This may come down to biting the bullet and ordering a ski. Not having ridden one, I don't think I will have much of a preference. Just ride and adjust to the ski. As far as surf riding, is there one that would be better than another as far as taking a beating goes ?

It's seeming that way. With my two skis being stock length, I don't get the "flippability". If they're nimble and wide, I don't think I'll mind it. My skis just lost some of their maneuverability it seemed after tubbies were installed

I know what change you are talking about, going from no tubbies to tubbies. And I am telling you that most a/m hulls are that change multiplied a few times over.

So without staying with a stock hull, there's no avoiding it. Even then I don't see one of the a/m hulls being less nimble than a slightly modded fx1?

They are nimble, but it's a different type of nimble if that makes sense.

Completely. I guess in the end there's no telling if it'll be what you want without testing it out. Might have to see if someone in the Texas area has one or any of the others
