Jetnetics Flywheel Damage

I recently sent a flywheel back to Jetnetics to have the ring gear replaced because the teeth were pretty worn out. When I finally got the flywheel back, it had some weird marks on it. Maybe it is marks from where it was re-balanced? Is this anything I should be concerned with or just run it and forget?

Yes except that it looks like the key is made into the ring gear, if so that's the only way it could be installed is to notch the flywheel. Usually it's just an interference fit or it is staked like on a Yamaha flywheel, even staked I have had several Yamaha flywheels spin the ring gear.

It looks like they used a cut off wheel to cut the flywheel ring open, but we’re watching the back side of the flywheel which appears smaller than the front stepped flange and cut into the outer flange that locates The ring gear by mistake….

I see no keying

Honestly I’d call and ask about it

The thing is, when I first spoke to Robert at Jetnetics and asked about replacing the ring gear he said to send it over and would have it fixed up in no time. It took over 2 months and was a bit difficult for him to keep contact. I will email him a picture and see what he says.

In all honesty it's a twenty plus year old flywheel that goes inside a motor, once it;s there no one will ever see it, dab some JB weld on the spot, sand it down and install the flywheel unless you are just using it for wall art.

I would see what they have to say about it, at the end of the day you paid for a service and potentially received a damaged product be it cosmetic or not. I agree with Harbor, looks like someone just made a small mistake. The other spot.. not sure. Really up to you if you how far you’re going to pursue it.

Your first mistake was thinking it needed a new ring gear if it still worked and had teeth to engage. A buddy had a msd tl flywheel get ground down by a bad bendix . I did the repair and just filed the teeth. They were thin but it works fine. The tbm sxr flywheel has very thin ring gear teeth. It's obvious that replacement ring has a tooth hanging down that needs a groove to fit in. Old style rings were just pressed on and then drilled for a roll pin to keep it from spinning. I like the tooth idea better. Repaired crap never looks as good as new

Robert got back to me quickly, the marks are from removing the old ring gear. He assured me that the marks are purely cosmetic and will not effect the fit or function.
I didn't care that it looked weird, I just didn't want it to throw a chunk of metal inside the cover! I was mostly concerned that it would effect the balance.

I had a TBM that literally had almost 50% each tooth missing from wear. Decided to get rid of it. Did not want to get stuck out in the surf anywhere with a ski that was not cranking due to this!!!!!!

Most people don't know this but the engine stops in one of two places every time it stops, at least withing a few degrees of rotation, there are only a few teeth 180 degrees from each other that the bendix actually engages while cranking but it's the same set of teeth each time, I used to run into this on Seadoos a lot and we replaced a lot of ring gears before Seadoo figured out the spacing was off causing poor engagement, in our case it was adjustable somewhat by deleting gaskets which moved the starter in closer and the housing back farther, nothing like that is possible on anything else that I am aware of. On some Yamahas I have had the ring gear spin on I have removed the ring gear , flipped it over and reinstalled it on the flywheel then spot welded the ring gear to the flywheel to secure it.

Does anyone have a contact number for Robert at Jetinetics?

Thanks
