Found a very clean stock SJ today in Michigan, fairly cheap.
Been sitting in home garage and not used for the last 3 years.
Only upgrade I could find is that grate?
Came with the original factory cover, owner's manual, tool kit, etc.....the only problem is it will not start.....the starter spins but does not engage flywheel.
Drained the gas tank, replaced spark plugs, installed brand new battery, pulled flywheel cover off, yanked on the Bendix back and forth, jiggled the wires to the starter........ still only spins!
How much of a PITA is it to replace the starter, or is it even necessary, maybe other problem?
Also, how do I pull the stock pipe out of there and what should I replace it with?
Oh yeah, I paid $450 for it.

if it spins ts probably not the starter. to get to it though, you have to remove the exhaust. its probably the bendix

congrats man, you'll never go back ;)

Sounds like the bendix is frozen. I'd pull it off and soak in kerosene overnight and see if that helps. Either way you can find them on here for about 40 bucks. The pipe just unbolts from the cylinder and should come right out. The bottom manifold bolts are tights but doable. If you can find a 650 pipe cheap ($200) then id pipe it... if not Id wait and ride it until you can shove a 701 in it

I thought I got a deal for $600 on my 1990 SJ 650 but I guess there are always better deals to be had!!
I would say bendix as problem!

I pulled the flywheel cover off to check bendix. Is it supposed to sort of flop around? I can pull it out to align with flywheel gears and push it back but it sort of moves sideways too when pushed back in.

Have you made sure the battery is 100% charged?

If it is, you might try spinning it over while tapping the case where the bendix is with a light hammer. It might jar it enough to engage. If it does fire though, i'd immediately stop to make sure it disengaged.

Yeah, the battery is brand new, I took it out of my Sxi Pro for this purpose.

Grand Rapids Craigslist, the guy was asking $500 for it, but remember it doesn't run............yet!

I read in the other thread, you have the FW cover off.

stuff a rag under the front of the engine, and spray that whole area down with brake cleaner.

work that bendix back and forth by hand really good, then rub some good grease on the snout where the part slides out, make sure it isnt rusted, or rough.

then spray some sort of light oil on the assembly, wipe off the excess, and then try it.

ive done a few like that thru the years, and never had any issues.

one of them is getting noisey now, but the last time I cleaned it was about 3 years ago.
