Freestyle Killswitch For Freestyle questions

Location

Hi everyone

so i of course like many other's on here, i enjoy watching others show off there freestyle skills and tricks, but i'm wondering what every one does about kill switches, as in most videos i see the rider/s don't have one and their ski doesn't idle away from them when they fall off.

now I know the reason for not having a lanyard in freestyle is because we need to be able to recover quickly and dont need the hassle of messing around with a lanyard (i think thats the reason, or something similar),so to my questions.

Questions:
1 - How come some peoples skis dont idle off (like away from them)
2 - is it easier to have a lanyard or not to have a lanyard in freestyle
3 - would it be hard to bypass the lanyard
4 - would you recommend it for a beginner

If you can answer anyone of these it'd be greatly appreciated,
Thanks

Most freestylers land there tricks so a fail safe isn't necessarily needed, I run a tether (not a pro rider) and I attached it to my jacket. I also run no idle cuz I do not trust it lol.

When u say idle off, I'm guessing u mean idle in a circle to come back to the fallen rider? Kawasaki did that up to the 750s then went to tether, Yamaha has always been a tether. Those facts are for standups unsure about sitdowns

ive run zip ties before too, with idle on, they swing around kawis do but i usually turn idle down. Xipties need to be cut and teplaced before ride or they can basically not reset once and awhile and needs to go down to resrt

I use a tether to my wrist under every circumstance. All it takes is a broken throttle return spring and god knows what may happen to your ski. Anything from nothing, to a blown motor or destroyed hull, anything is possible. The likelihood of a throttle spring breaking is miniscule though yes. I ride around a lot of sheriffs/police, last thing I need is a ticket for no kill switch.

I had a kawi with the idle circle thing, throttle stuck maybe 1/4 throttle and girlfriend fell off. Probably went 2 miles before it hit the only rock onthe lake and sunk. I always run a tether, keep a fresh strap on it too.

Run a lanyard, better safe than sorry. Only time i don't run one is when I'm competing. Even then it sketches me out.
I've had by old BOB take off on me, heart stopping watching it plain out with me not on it and nothing I could do.

Vintage skis don't have to have lanyards because they didn't come with them from the factory. With that said, my 1st ski was a 650sx. I had read about springs breaking on the forum. I was riding one day about a mile off shore when my throttle went limp. The forums must have been in the back of my mind because I immediately shut the ski off. Squared up, hit start, went for a ride at WOT. Good thing I had a stockish 650sx and not a monster like some of the stuff now.

Anyway, my SX got a lanyard face plate. It drives me nuts when I do hood tricks and pull my lanyard on my superjet, but idle down or whatever other bogus technique is not acceptable to me. Maybe if I ever entered in a closed course competition where the rules allowed it, I;d wrap the lanyard around the bars, but otherwise, never. Not worth killing someone over, and if that thing with my SX had happened at the lake and gotten away from me, that is what would have happened.

Annnnnd then what happened?

I just run my ski with no idle...been working great for 8 years. Make sure the butterflies are synced and closed properly and your ski will never idle away.

Use a lanyard! Many don't, but it isnt safe for those around and isnt worth messing around with. Idle stop isnt safe, if something fails trouble. Have seen too many never misses from runaway skis.

Thanks Everyone And Maybe i'll Keep that in mind And Like Vumad said "Maybe if I ever entered in a closed course competition where the rules allowed it, I;d wrap the lanyard around the bars" which i agree with, i was just curious as to why people would run without one and if there where any up sides or down sides
Thanks Everyone :D

And if your throttle cable broke or got pinched you ski would become a torpedo!

Guy on a couch at the lake I ride forgot his lanyard and zipped it. Let a friend ride it. He fell off and the throttle stuck half open. Ski tool off like a bat outta hell straight towards the marina with a few million dollars worth of boats. Unbelievably it went straight through the boats, invested a ton of gravel before it ended up in the parking lot. Some bystander ran over and killed it before it blew.
Wouldn't want to EVER be that guy!

Safety should always come first with this or any other dangerous sport. Use a lanyard. For freestyle maybe rigg 2 together so it's longer.
