Hey guys, I was wondering if I could pick your guys' brains and see what you think about this SJ im looking at buying. Its a 92' with a 701 61x motor (Did they make the SJ with a 701 in that year?). Top end is freshly rebuilt. Some brief history on the boat is the current owner bought it needs some work done, from the sounds of it he doesn't know too much about it because hes just been too busy to mess around with it. The owner before him said it needed a starter relay but when I had him take pics he noticed there is a new one installed, but he didnt see any coil (so I guess I need that instead). Also the exhaust needs a new hose coupler (not sure which one yet). I don't know much about these things so from the pictures could you guys tell me if you see anything good/bad or if anything else is missing. I did notice there isn't a battery tray. Any of your wisdom would be greatly appreciated

Pictures- I was going to direct link them here but they are a little large.

brraap....thats so 2002
the 701 cylinder is from 95 on,it should be a 61x, hopefully its not off someting like a wave venture(taller exhast port timing.) it looks as if the pipe is missing? other than that clean looking square.

It doesn't look bad, thats for sure!! It is a 61x & by the looks of things, I would have to guess the motor has been taken out reciently. You are correct in that the coil is missing, the rest looks to be in place. The exhaust is also missing. From the gasket & cut exhaust tube, I belive it had a B pipe there. Does that come with it? If not ask "Why Not"
as for the value................. if everything was togeather & running $1500. Maybee a little more? if you need to replace the B pipe, thats about $650 shipped, an oem coil is $120.............. If you can make the numbers work, you would definately be happy with it.
Good luck!

$400 or so..

maybe more if you have a pipe available for cheap.

it is a 701 cylinder on 650 cases. so its not a true 701, bore is right, but it wont breathe like a full 701 engine.

How much is the seller asking?

you will need a few hundred in parts to get it going it looks like.
( minimum)

I could be wrong, but in that last photo labeled piston, it looks like some water ingestion eveidence on that piston... they all have that ( that I have seen) but that would make me question the " fresh top end"
