Today, Gasgas noticed that his couplers have a 3/4 inch gap between them, not the usuall 1/4 like I usually see. Has anyone ever seen the stubshaft move back on its own, they are pressed on the bearing and stick past so many mm's on the backside normally? And the engine is all the way back on the motor mounts. 2005 sj

The Good Old Days
My shaft moved back a good 3/8" when I landed a$$ first on a sand bar.
I thought there would have been major pump/hull damage after the landing but I got lucky. The steering cable got bent and not much else.

I did have 2 broken motor mounts at the time which might have allowed the motor to move back far enough to push the shaft into the bearings.

Was wondering if that could do it, he has hit bottom a few times. Think it could be tapped foreward if the pump was out?

Book says 19.5-20.5mm at the rear...
I aim for approx 20 & as said above a few belts with a soft hammer will do the trick...

I always take the midshaft out to press it where you need it. The shaft bearing is housed in rubber to let the shaft move from the engine shaking, not shure thats the best way to move it. 20mm seems right on it sticking out the back. I never tried this method so it may work.

I am not a mechanic nor do I claim to be, so try my method at your own risk lol. It worked for us but may not for you. I am not responsible for further breakage lol.

remove the midshaft and put a block of wood on the backside and tap it out...

DO NOT pull the pump out and stick something in the midshaft from the pump side and try to push it out..my buddy did that (he used a driveshaft) and it took me about 4hrs to get it out..
