MikeyChan's DVX & TPE build

Let me start by going back a few years. In 2014 I started off on a Bob gen2 and a JM781, I can say great things about that motor...not the hull however. While selling the parts of this build I finally went to Havasu thanks to a local buddy of mine (@Todd grochowski) who we both experienced our first year of something I don't think either of us will ever get tired of. I met Erik @ TPE there and test rode the 964 and 1105. Even tho I wasn't in love with the Havoc hull I loved the power. For 6 months Erik and I spent at least an hour a week with Erik on the phone looking at one of his 964s that someone on the forum was selling. Finding out it was the first gen motor and that a new one would only be another 400 bucks I decided to give Erik my business for everything he did for me. In 2015 despite any negative reviews I purchased a Backie Chan used by a guy on the forum, not so much these days unfortunately, and had a starters kit waiting for a motor. And boy did I have the perfect thing for that. Brand new TPE 964 w/ PFP pipe and 148. Was able to finally get 180s, 270s, and maybe one or two full 360s. I also landed my first flips on that hull.

Fast forward to World Finals of 2015. I knew what hull I wanted and just needed to find a used hull without a motor. Finally I found just what I was looking for. A DVX and a TPE motor. It happened to be an 1105 and I was knowing I wanted to get a 900 eventually. Finding out just about everything can change between the shortblocks I emptied my bank account and went way over my original budget of 17k. I purchased TL electronics built and installed by Phill @ P&P performance. A new V3 from Tim @ TNT, and a few odds and ends. Getting the ski changed from race gas to pump gas domes and having the motor tuned was awesome. I thought I was on a Pro 1200 ski. Finally getting down tricks and combos I knew it was finally the time and the year. Time for my 900. So lets not just change the motor, how about we build the whole ski. Everything (well mostly) new.

So the build will be as followed:
DVX hull
155 Skat setback pump
H20 hardened driveshaft
Xmetal trim with coupler mod
replacing the 1105 with the 900CO (pump gas & 50/50 domes)
TNT V3 exhaust
Jazz fuel cell
Total Loss

Pictures to follow as what would a build be without them lol. Well this is to thank people who have been of great help, provided products for my build or past ones, and who also provide great support for me which keeps me going. In no particular order of sincerity. Thankyou to @Erik Brigham at TPE @Todd grochowski @Philip Clemmons @JetManiac @Midlake Crisis @tntsuperjet @Jetfiend @StandupNation @Buzzard @sinisterjosh209 for paint advice and just being a cool dude trying to grow freestyle in CA @my family for their support @local lake riders for their conversations, thumbs ups, and encouragement throughout the season.

As promised, build pics and maybe some aireal shots :) Probably some trash talk from my buddies who have heard of this build for the past 4 months of me trying to decide on paint colors

Okay that sounds nice, excited to see and hear how you like your new TPE900CO engine, that setup would be very close to identical to mine, except the TNT V3 chamber :)

Well lets get some pictures going
Got the ski shipped to my old college two hours from home so picked it up without a motor with practically one hand

Sent the motor in to TPE and have the motor inspected, cleaned, Pump gas domes installed and TL installed.
20160107_203114.jpg Screenshot_2016-08-30-23-55-12.png Finally starting flipping consistently and being able to ride out. Went from landing 1/20 to now maybe 10/20. My problem was over rotating ;)

Now the wetsuit is gone so fast forward to end of June for a Bday ride. Landing 20/20 on most days because I was practicing sending it rather than how many I could do or combos. I had double flipped in the past but water is now shallow and won't be trying anything new there. Time for a rebuild and start traveling!

Let us know how that 900 runs

Yeah I'm very curious as to how it performs compared to the 1105. That 1105 hit really hard so I am not holding my breath that it will be better but to keep as much power as I am used to is what I am shooting for

My 900r had a lot of upper mid and top. I'd still be happy with that motor today if it didn't eat a rod bearing. The 1105 has that power from the time you even touched the gas. Might be a little adapting. Still a 10mil stroke how much power can you loose just dropping piston size

Well the piston size isn't the main difference between the TPE 1105 and TPE 900. The 1105 is a 10mil but the 900 is only a 4mil. Just like the PHP898 motor, same crank. All other 900s are 10mils but I know TPE has done their homework so Im not worried. But I got 50/50 Domes in case the 1105 on pump gas has spoiled me lol

I didn't realize the 900 wasn't a 10mil

Yeah it will be interesting to see what it does being such a small crank compared to others but same as the php 898 and people stand behind that. I have riden an 898 and know there is enough power to compete on that boat so for me it will come down to being spoiled of big power to compensate for skills. Also because this motor isn't as common as the dasa or xscream 900 ill use Havasu to test a few similar boats out and see with back to back testing. From what I have noticed riding other skis is that they all have the power to do what you want but each engine works differently so its a matter of the rider to know how to do what he wants when changing equipment.

So where was I, ahh. So as I'm getting better I keep breaking parts. Reduction nozzle, rideplate, steering mount, rideplate, driveshaft, pole bolts and oh yeah rideplate. Seriously I have repaired it countless times. Time to make my own and a backup. Fibers separated on the original. Some of the old hardware was just that, old or loose bolts causing them to break. This last time I was repairing my electronics down to a busted pickup. Since shipping would be a week let's finally get a rebuild in so I don't go into another comp with someone else's boat. You have no idea how old that gets at comps when people ask who's boat this is. Well I'm standing by it and filling up with gas....so time to make this Mike B's ski aka MikeyChans not so Chan.

The Final sticker...
20160812_225728.jpg
The leading cause to the rebuild was the turf was shot and my feet where bruised. Seriously, three days in a row and last ride with the ski i bruised my big toe and couldn't kick in anymore. Pics of toe soon
20160814_122237.jpg
Oh $hit did I really just do that. Well its official now. Not going to be USA DVX anymore
20160816_141717.jpg
Oh soo much sanding. Even with an orbital I went through 30 sanding disks but finally got through the top half of paint now.
20160817_184120.jpg
Starting to sand by hand around the scuppers and hard to reach areas for the orbital. Also sanding to get rid of any rings from the sander and make everything flat and smooth.
20160820_202046.jpg

Well that's the end of sanding for the night. About 4 days into it so far.... Tune in for more. Remember these hulls are no more so this might be the last DVX build in history ;) Next will be those talk funny hulls

Sorry to disappoint. I have wanted to do house of colors Blue candy that looks amazing but unfortunately too many people have painted their skis blue although they have all been different shades and the wrong ones ;) but I want to do something different. I will be nice and simple this year but I have big plans for my next ski to be a super flashy and not seen color yet. But since I had already purchased the paint I have to use it now lol

No I have been looking at visual carbon fiber hulls in pictures from a distance and seeing they are a gray or a charcoal. I also wanted to do black or a dark gray. I ended up with a color which I'm not sure how it will turn out. Anything from a dark charcoal to a black with some metallic flake just to make it different than black but something to go with blue and silver as I may get graphics. No I wasn't going to do white, I spent a week sanding that would have been the ultimate kick in the balls if I did that in the end lol. The color I plan to do next year will be a color that has been done before but a candy or chrome paint job. This one will be subtle as its my first year competing and don't want to be the $hitty rider on a kick ass ski lol. Rather just be the $hitty rider on a decent looking, classy ski haha. I want the paint to turn out good enough where graphics are not a must in order to make it a good looking ski. I liked a ski earlier this year that didn't have the typical DVX graphics but instead just had a few stickers on the side and let the paint do its justice when up close
