If surf isn't nuts and I can get him out with me when it isn't busy I plan to let my 10 year old try surf. Checking first to see if there is an age requirement.

Lol. I knew that regular rules prohibit it, but I figured i owed it to him to see if event rules are different. He is a good rider and has been dying to ride surf.

Ya, maybe. I know in oklahoma if your under 16 you have to take a safely course but i think you have to be atleast 12-14. So a good disguise is probably best lol.

Shane both my boys are riding but they have passed GA boaters safety course and are legal in Georgia, but not sure if they would be legal in Florida.

It’s the Law!
Florida law requires that persons born on or after January 1, 1988, complete a NASBLA-approved boater education course prior to operating a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or more. The law requires that persons affected by this legislation have in their possession a Boating Safety Education I.D. Card issued by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission and photographic I.D. while operating a vessel.

Even if not required by law to get the Florida boating license, many boaters take the boat safety course in order to save on their PWC or boat insurance.

You Must Carry the Card
Vessel operators who are required to have a Boater Education Card must carry the card on board the vessel and have it available for inspection by an enforcement officer.

Reciprocity
All states, territories, and provinces will recognize boating education cards that meet NASBLA requirements and Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Cards that meet Transport Canada’s requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)"

I would suggest you try to ride first thing in the morning (when the zone 1st opens) or at the outer edges of the zone in the evening. Sending a 10 yr old into the mix at 1am near the host hotel would be a bit reckless in my opinion.

Also I would send someone out with him if the surf is over 2-3ft. My wife handled the 2-3ft waves just fine, but never fell, her first ride. The second day it was 5ft, she was doing fine until she fell, but got wrecked by the power of the surf, never got back up, swam in. Ski got swamped, but I told her she should have ditched it sooner. She's in good shape but 5+ft put down some power. Her interest in riding has always been less since then.

I recall you have been there previous years, but no one wants to see any kids hurt for sure.

Thanks for your advice, but yes I do have enough experience to have considered those variables. It will have to be pretty calm, not crowded, and I will be with him and probably a few others all intent on him.

Gomez even offered to take him out for his first run and Jake is stoked. Jake will be on Mark's old roundnose. But if there is any doubt at all on any of those variables he will have to wait for another time. Safety first. 20150113_181921.jpg

Mcdog,

I saw this thread before Daytona and had the same questions about the minimum age limit for my son, Jake, also. He had just passed the Florida boater safety course after turning 14 and I wasn't sure that would be enough for the event. He had only ridden 2 other times prior but has ridden motocross for many years.

Needless to say, he had the best time and can't wait for next year. He's officially been bitten by the Brap bug! The only problem is now I have to get busy building another ski so I can get mine back.

I hope your "Jake" got out there and had a great experience that he'll never forget.

I have to thank the FL West Coast crew- Pat, Bonnie, Scott, JJ- for helping make it possible. The people in this sport are awesome.

I realize that the event is over but...

The back page of Pro Rider Magazine presents "Future Threats".
The December 2014 issue points out 3 young riders aged 13, 11 and 13.
Also pointed out are events in which they've competed. Some along with adults.
I don't know how this applies to Florida. But the "event" status must surely make a difference.
If I'm not mistaken, the future threats page is a staple of the mag.

It would be cool to see your son on this page of a future issue!

I saw your son riding! We were near each other on Sunday I guess but didn't meet. I let my Jake ride on Sunday too. The other days were too rough. He did great and loved it. I rode with him and my wife took some pics before he rode and when he got back but I guess she was too nervous to think of it while watching us ride. She did get some video but it was terrible quality and we look far away.

First pic is before we rode.

Second is with Tem and Nancy's daughter Mia.

Third is him wiped out on the way home. He usually NEVER sleeps in the truck. Lol

I'm glad your son was able to get out there... And I look forward to meeting you both next year.
