No luck with search...

I have a clearance issue with my pipe. It's grazing the fuel tank. I'd rather not put a dent in the pipe if I do not have to.

Does anyone have any experience shaping a fuel tank? Can I take a heat gun to the tank and dent it in instead? Will it leak over time? The tank will flex so I can't reenforce it with glass... Ideas?

I don't see a problem taking a heat gun to it but then again you are changing the molecular structure of the molecules so time will tell I say go for it.

I have used a heat gun to mold tank's for pipe clearance problem's on a few 550/650 conversion ski's and no problem's I used a baseball bat to form it curved go for it.

Almost all OE fual tanks are HDPE and respond well to heat molding. No issues. Rinse it well so you don't blow yourself up and contour the shape with a piece of PVC, baseball bat, etc. It takes a good bit of heat to get it to shape. They're surprisingly think. Heat it until it begins to go transparent. Boiling water inside the tank can speed up the process.

When we build the GPRXP (Yamaha GP1200r with a RXP motor in it) we have to remold the tank a little bit all we do is use a heat gun and a 2x4. Also we used to put xlt tanks in gpr's it too need a little heat gun action. So to answer you question yes you can use a heat gun gis slow so you dont melt through the tank.

Dude, after you get the fumes out use a heat gun for small areas, and propane radiant heater for large areas. The plastic will turn clear as it heats to molding temp, use glove and something to shape it like wood, it will be harder at corners. Having compressed air nearby is nice to cool the shape fast once you get it.

I was thinking compressed air. I also use a spray bottle with H20 also.

I used a propane blow torch and large pvc pipe on my stock X2 tank when I put the sj mod chamber in. Becareful though...you can heat it too much (and split the side of the tank open). As soon as you get it to shape, spray it with the hose. Cools fast and will hold the shape.
