Motor mount bed plates

So I'm currently working on restoring a previously splashed Eme q8 hull. The previous guy had used 1/4 inch alluminum plate that was attached to the hull with a single bolt through the bottom of the hull for the engine mount location.(not that strong) How does everyone else do their engine mount bedplates? I have searched and searched but have came up empty handed.

Are you taking about the engine mounting plates that normally come epoxy’d to the bottom of engine bay ?

You’d have to make some aluminum plates and plexus epoxy them into the engine bay... here are mine..

Yes exactly what I need, how are you attaching them the to hull? Just glass over them?

They are plexus epoxy’d to the hull.., They are normally put in by the hull builder... the cloth over them is to make it look nice..

You’ll have to make some, James town distributors sells plexus Epoxy and the gun and mixing tips.. plexus 420 in a 490 ML tube... kinda expensive..

Maybe other cheaper alternatives.. saw thrust has another Brand on their site.. not sure if good for this though

Quick question, would 1/4 aluminum plate be sufficent for the bed plates? Or should I weld blocks underneath the 1/4 inch plate that way I can extend the amount of threads?

The few aftermarket hulls I've had my hands on they have been thicker than 1/4 inch, maybe about a half inch, and not just epoxied to the hull, a few layers of cloth either over the whole mount, or taper the sides of the mount and lay a few layers of cloth over the taper to hold them in better than just epoxying to the hull.

Like storbeck mentioned it’s usually thicker..

You may have thought of this already, but I’ll suggest Doing a mock up with wood first. You don’t want it to end up to high as it’s hard to lower an engine.. can shim up easier for alignment..

This would also tell you how thick or thin you have to go with your base plates...

The idea is to build it out of would first. put in your mounts and align your engine with room for using shims, once you get your thickness and shape figured, transfer that to metal.....

That plexus needs a few mm’s if thickness below your plates so factor that in as well and also don’t press the plates down to hard eliminating it...

Can the hull builder be contacted to find out what he uses or to buy some plates?

Not sure if my plates are contoured on the bottom side ? Kinda look like that are somewhat and wedge shaped ?

You might dimple drill the bottom of plates, not near your bolt holes but elsewhere so the plexus has some are to grab too...

I was told the cloth around the inserts is more a finish touch, obviously it adds some strength but the plexus is the structural adhesive holding the plate down..

One pic has big holes in center of plate for glue...

Edit: forgot to mention, Online Metals sells small amounts cut to size. Might find some bar there when needed

Sweet, thanks for the info guys, and yes I do plan on making a template out of wood first, and I already have a bunch of aluminum stock laying around so I'm good on that also.
