i was thinking about buying a new msd enhancer. i just wanted to know everybody's opinion if it's worth $270. this will be for my 96, b1 i have a bpipe and stubby pump cone. im i going to see any gain in bottom end and is it going to be reliable.

probably not
the only reason I got one was to upgrade my ebox from 650 6M6
to a 701 and get the higher rev limiter

No.
Spend a little less and mod your stock CDI to drop the rev limiter or spend a little more for a fully programmable ignition like the ATP Epic.

And MSD Enchancer is the worst of all worlds: non-programmable, expensive, spotty reliability.

hmm i love my enhancer easy to plug in and it definitely jumped my xjet up in performance.

imo its worth it for sure because its like night and day with it in my xjet compared to before

Never been a night & day difference for me. I'd be lucky to notice any difference at all.

im going to look into the epic sometime this seasion. if the msd is spotty reliable then screw that

I agree w/ Matt_E...not a very noticeable "seat of the pants" difference, if any at all. Mine only lasted two years, and that's with very short summers here and in fresh water.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, do the mod yourself for the rev limit. Otherwise, save up for the EPIC from ATP.

with the epic does it have to be set up with the computer or could i just plug it in and ride. im really just tring to find some more bottom end power.but all around power is a + too.

Personal curiousity and also for the betterment of the thread, what exactly goes wrong with the MSD?

What is spotty?

Not defending, just curious. I have one and its always good to know what to look for.

just fitted MSD to my wb1 61x the weekend,it sounds crisper and revves like hell on the floor but havent got a chance to get out in the water yet,ill let you know how i go as ive a simular set up to yours, funny the replys as i was recommended by everyone to go for it!

just forget about MSD's ... as said before it won't last 2 years if you'r lucky ...

Mine died last week on my other ski after 2 years ( and more than 10 months sitting on the box)

Can't go wrong with Epic first and last CDI you will buy !

i figured it ment it could work great one day and not work the next day

Yeah, but what specificly? Does it just not work at all, or are people experiencing issues at specific places?

I've been dealing with engine issues for the better part of 6 months and im interested to know if this may be my issue.

is it worth changing a stock cdi to an epic if there are no problems with the stock cdi? aka will there be a noticeable difference in performance with only a bpipe installed on a 701? i have never been sure what a modified cdi does other then raising the rev limit.

thanks

It will stop firing the spark plugs either completely or it will fire them only when you let off the start button.

A programmable ignition (like the EPIC) lets you run different ignition timing curves, which also allows you to use more compression without changing to higher octane gas (with the right curve, of course).
Is it worth it? I don't know, that's entirely subjective.

2 years, 150+ hours on my MSD with no issues
a little hotter spark than oem cdi but thats about it

As already said, the MSD common failures are that it doesn't fire the plugs anymore or only fires when releasing the start button. Another failure mode (what I experienced) was that the rev limit adjustment pot farted out.

It depends on how you use the throttle. If you like to fan the throttle then a programable will make a noticeable difference. If you are slow with the throttle then there will be very little difference. The stock ignition timing goes from approx 15 degrees at idle to 21 and stays there. A programable allows the timing to spike up after idle and go back down at full power giving better throttle response without melting pistons at WFO.

The difference in acceleration will be very noticeable. A modified cdi only raises the rev limit , that's needed in white water or whist racing.
