MSD TL Fun

I finished putting this together earlier this week. I copied Paul's idea for using the stock electrical box, coil, starter solenoid, and plugs. I used liquid tape and shrink tube to seal everything up. I wanted to use the shrink tube that has sealant built into it, but tired of looking for it and hope this works as well. The box is upside down to shorten the distance between the brain and the entry plug.

I've got to say one thing - the plug that goes into the cases and the plug that go into the box are different.

I learned that the hard way and had to re-solder all those connections on both ends.

I'm also using a pickup plate with 2 pick-ups so I can switch over easily if one of the pick ups fails. The Delphi plugs are the ones that MSD sells. I'm sure the deutsch connectors are better, but these were cheaper and available locally.

Much thanks to Paul for his input and info-sharing.

Keep in mind that the shaking and vibration that caused your "in use" trigger to fail has been happening to your "spare" trigger as well. It might be a decent idea to do on a race boat as a last chance effort to keep a boat running in a hurry, but on a freestyle boat when you finally switch to it, you'll be switching to a very used trigger even if it's never been connected. Better to use lots of glue to provide support and strain relief for the trigger wires and have a genuine spare new trigger if you ever have a failue. Vibration and bad wire support is almost always what kills a trigger.

thats also very good info. However I think the best reason scenerio for using 2 would be if your freeriding somewhere and your ignition takes a crap ,all you have to do is swap wires and continue with the rest of your vacation while your 500 miles from home ! the last thing i want to do is ''WRENCH ON THE BEACH '' unless it cant possibly be helped for some catastrophic reason. I would be grateful to switch to a very used working trigger then have to pull a flywheel and trigger on the beach somewhere wouldn't you ? The odds against both picups craping at the same time are not in our lifetime ! especially if you use lots of glue and sealer like you recomended . the only reason i want to open my hood on the beach is to show somebody my work , not show em im working on it ! ...STAY RIDIN ! good ideas !

Wildman, nice toes in that first picture. :haha: :arms:

It is about time you put something together on your TL. Nice idea of putting it in the stock electrical box. Have you figured out your timing curve yet? Can’t wait to see if you think it made it hit any harder.

Thanks for the input. I'll make sure and support those wires very well.

I didn't have to do anything special to set this up, the plate had the dual pick ups when I bought it, so, to me, it's a win-win situation.

I suspect I'll never know if it makes it hit any harder as this will likely be the only ignition I use on the lamey. I considered putting it on my current motor, but doubt I will.

Curve . . . Um, 3 degrees/1000, start to retard at 5200 to 5400, 8800 rev limit. I wrote down the static timing, but don't know if off the top of my head.
