cranking issues first,

engine spins fine without plugs in, put the plugs in and it only spins one or two revolutions and the starter and/or bendix spin but the bendix disengages the flywheel.

is it the bendix?

second,

held the plugs against the cylinder head and they werent sparking with the motor spinning. with the MSD still ON, i STUPIDLY messed with the lanyard and im guessing the lanyard closed the pickup circuit and the coil/brain made an electrical PEWWWWW sound fairly loud for like half a second. the MSD's led light stayed on. i got a thicker lanyard thing since the other one was too thin, then turned on the MSD again and the led only lights up for a split second. Then i spun the motor with the plugs against the head, and they were sparking.

However, i cant get the motor to start since the starter or bendix spins off the flywheel after a couple revolutions.

Did i blow the brain, or like wtf? Last i heard if the LED was off the brain was fried.

Is there a way to tell if it is the bendix.I had it out once before and it spins freely, and the return mechanism/spring pulls it back easily/quickly.

Sounds like a week starter if plugs spark while turning it over its fine but once the starter has to turn over compression and it doesn't so it sounds like a starter

As far as your cranking issue goes it does sound like the bendix is not staying engaged, I've had that before and that's what it did, momentarily turn the crank then kick out and just spin, "freewheeling starter and bendix" without flywheel....

You may want to mark your ring gear to flywheel to verify the ring gear is not spinning independently of the flywheel while your in there

Water intrusion ruins them, they stick, the weights stick, fall out. Open it up and inspect it's operation and replace it. If you hold the large gear and turn the small gear it should extend only in one direction and retract on its own, the weights should be free and not stuck, clean free of rust...

With the bendix in your hand turn the small gear clock wise and it extends out then locks.....

When you release it retracts...

Free wheels in the counter clock wise direction with a slight resistance....

If You spin out the gear the weights can be moved freely with a small screw driver and spring should be tight and intact

If you have an old timing cover you could cut the upper part off leaving the bendix support and inspect it live while cranking, prolly inspect key way too

Thanks for fast responses guys. I held my bendix end by hand and spun it, something on the main shaft let loose and the center shaft was spinning. replaced bendix w/o taking motor out.

Odd part is, i put the bendix in the vise and with 48" monkey wrench couldnt get it to slip. must be some sort of vibration letting the center shaft skip and spin. Oh well. BRAAAAP tomorrow!

Ya mine was odd also, looked fine and didn't slip but would not stay extended under the centrifugal force of the starter spinning it
