After a decision to build a dedicated flatwater ski a few seasons back, I've been hooked! I have built several aftermarket hulls for myself, and worked with several customers on various hulls as well. Approaching 40 years old, my wife and I decided I should go "all in" while I still physically can. I built my first stroker engine several seasons back, and it resided in a few different hulls as I progressed and became more serious (and thus more "financially committed") to these projects. I eventually ended up with a 10 mil Dasa 1100 that made ridiculous power! Even with this power, I struggled for a season or two with backies, and received help from many of the great riders in the sport, including Pancake Pete, Lucas Vasconcelos, Jeremy Parr, Johnny Leftly, Brian Wilkey, Jason Hurt (aka "tricky"), Chris Anyzeski, Daniel "live action" Martin, and last but not least, Patrick Bogart. After spending some time around these pros, I realized that just being them around pushed
my riding to new heights (hows that for a pun ). This revelation convinced me to move from my current lightweight flatwater hull to something smaller and more agile, and to attend some IJSBA events this season and compete in freestyle. After test riding several of the hottest hulls on the market, I decided upon a KDX from Xscream. Not only was it, in many cases, less money than some of the other hulls, it was also more complete and finished like no other aftermarket ski I've ever seen! I got to burn a few tanks on a 900 KDX at Daytona this year, and I was doing things (with noticeably less power than my 1100) that I couldn't do on my ski with more power. The hull simply worked better for the type of riding and my ability level. I dont claim to be a great rider.......I'm not.......but this hull inspired confidence in me and took me into new tricks and combos previously out of my reach, and all on a demo ski setup for someone else. Before I'm accused of being an XS choir boy, let me make it clear that I paid full retail for this hull, and am competing with a Dasa 10 mil 885. I simply call it how I see it. Now that that's out of the way, here's the info on the build.
The hull is a standard production KDX. With engine mounts and after paint, it weighed in at 47.5 pounds. The hood is slightly over 8 pounds. Standard with this hull are two scuppers (one on each side), a sweet carbon ride plate, carbon hood, pump shoe, and all inserts per your build. All hardware is metric, and off of a std superjet. No mixing of SAE and metric on here. All std superjet parts will bolt right in.
The fit and finish is unreal. I am OCD and very detail oriented, and can't find a single issue with this hull. The craftsmanship and appearance are the best I've seen on ant production hull. The motor mount pads are spot on, as are the tank and pipe inserts. The pump area is prepped and ready for install, with the inserts leveled off and tried up at XS. All of the water lines (and exhaust tube) are anodized for corrosion protection, as are the motor mount pads. The tray is carbon Kevlar reinforced, and the footholds are awesome with tons of room for padding and big feet. One of the XS guys challenged me to find a sharp edge inside the hull, and I couldn't. He explained he had a few hours deburring and finishing the inside to alleviate the issues of carbon splinters for their customers. The attention to detail shows. When I asked for a quote, Rick said "we consider these works of art, not just hulls". I thought that was a BS sales pitch, but the finished product shows that that vision is real!
Current setup (and for the season) will be a Dasa 10 mil 885, Powerfactor pipe, 49 Full Specs from Ed Brazina, MSD Total Loss, Rhaas products' new billet urethane motor mounts, and a 148 billet setback mag. It will be built and tuned by P&P Performance.
Thanks to all that have made this possible, including Kyle Kennedy@Dasa, Pat, Jason, and Rick at Xscream, Mike B@Optima Racing, David@impros, and Robin@Rhaas products.
Here are some pics to get started. I'll update as I have time. It's a mad thrash to get ready for the 60 degree day Saturday, before it snows Sunday lol. Hopefully I'll be off to FL for some training/warm weather riding for spring break.
