Freestyle My Impressions of the True Performance 960

So after annoying Erik for the past two days, I finally talked him into letting me take the test ski to the lake with my brother to try out the 960 engine package. For those of you who don't know me, I have been in the sport for over 20 years and have had the privilege to meet some of the best minds in our industry. From Tim Judge to Darren Hedlund, I have had the opportunity to ride some of the nicest built skis in the history of the sport. So, I think I have a decent idea of what power is in terms of a PWC engine.

Here are my impressions of the new True Performance 960 Engine Package.

Set up:
Rickter FS1
62t cases
TPE Cylinder, Head, Domes
95mm bore
Stock Elecs w/ MSD Enhancer
Stock Flywheel
NYNJA Exhaust
ATP Waterbox
Full Spec 49mm Carb and Rad Valve Intake
144mm Solas Pump

After addressing a couple of set up issues (getting the right nozzle, prop set up) I hit the water to see what all the fuss is about. Pretty much everyone knows that the Rickter is a heavy b1tch. lol But, for my rather limited freestyle skills, its larger hull design and wide tray make it easy to handle. Even tho the Rickter is a bit of a pig, I was pretty much blown away by the power of this engine. My old 8mm Powervalve blasters had every bell and whistle you could put on a ski up to 800ccs and other than Phil Clements' Lamey 1100, I had yet to ride a freestyle/freeride ski that had that same kind of low end grunt and quick reving nature. The single best compliment I can give this TPE 960 is that it felt JUST LIKE my old 8mm. It revs extremely quick and feels like a ski with a powerfactor pipe and Total loss. Even with the girth of the Rickter and my novice freestyle ability, I was able to nearly rotate this thing around. All on 170 lbs of compression and pump gas. If this motor package was in a more flip friendly hull, I could backflip it without hesitation. Again, on pump gas and a stock stroke motor.

I've known Erik for 17 years and lord knows there are not two people who are more blunt and un-sugar coating than Joe and I when it comes to him and his ideas, but I have to give him credit. His cylinder rocks. No doubt about it, it is a game changer, especially when you take into account that you don't need race gas, total loss or a powerfactor pipe to unlock the power. But, if you do have that stuff, look out! I have nothing but respect for the guys like Dasa and XScream, they make great products. Unlike some on this site, I don't feel the need to beat down someone or something that is different than what my opinion is. But, True Performance is right up there with the best in this industry and all it takes is one ride to understand it.

Job well done, Erik. Job well done.

Scottie

PS
Just for the record, I am NOT a part of True Performance and don't get a dime for Erik selling product. My opinion is just that, but I don't sugar coat.

After reading this much better detailed descritption of the package it sounds like there is really something to it. I do know how those mod motors rev'd up and if its as said then the future is looking good for us. Thanks for your review and I look forward to hearing more.

Good to hear. Erik is a great guy with tons of knowledge and has been more than helpful with any question I have thrown his way....no matter how silly they have been, he has always taken the time to explain (and sometimes over explain hahaha) the theories and reasoning behind them. Super helpful! If you guys are getting this much power out of a non maxed out stock stroke....imagine what the stroker dialed in with all the bells and whistles will do. Can't wait to get ours over here and over to Oz.

So your telling us you nearly had full rotation on a fs1 with ss motor ? Wow... Impressive, chuck one in a stock superjet see how far you get around. Was that running dual carbs?

Let me be clear, I am NO freestyler. I am a racer. I would put my freestyle ability at a hard 2 on a scale of 1 to 10, lol. (1 being 'you suck') I did the 'slide out and pin it' technique and basically came down nose straight down. Like I said, I didn't rotate it all the way around, but I think someone with true freestyle ability could.

I will say this, tho. Between riding this motor in the Rickter and riding Phil's 900cc Superfreak has me thinking I may have to build a play ski. I had a ton of fun today, been a while since I got on the water to do nothing more than play.

The best compliment I can give is the fact that it revs up so quick with a big heavy stock flywheel and MSD enhancer on it. Unreal. Anyone that rode that ski as is would swear it was a total loss, 200+lb compression, race gas engine. But it freekin rips with 170 lbs..... You literally could drop this complete topend on a "limited" wet pipe ski and have a truly awesome performer. All I can say is WOW... Great Job Erik!

Which part of Australia are you located? Erik has said he'd be sending us a couple on the initial batch. At least one of them will go out to my partner 701dave in Aus.
