Other my motor has no reeds?

so i have a 87 550sx and i know nothing about jet skis but general idea of motors. anyways it was running like crap and supposedly has some aftermarket work down to it but we tok the carb off to clean which was really gummed up and also saw there were no reeds?!? idk i was under the impression most all 2 stroke motor needed reeds also if it helps the intake on it said something like bow racing and it has i believe a 44mm mikuni carb...thanks!

Sounds like you have a piston port motor...can't exactly explain how it all works but don't believe they have reeds.

Old 550's like that were "piston port." The position of the piston opens and closes the intake ports.

ok so if i was having issues that appeared to be carb issues and the little black filter was probly 80% clogged and its al cleaned now it should run better ? ha i hope lol. the big black diaphram in the carb another thing im a little un firmiliar with was kinda creased and almost felt like it was swollen and didnt wanna sit right back in. i plan on buying a rebuild kit but thats good to know cause ive never heard of this so called piston port, thanks alot guys!

If your internal filter in the carb is getting clogged, you may want to add an inline filter from the tank. Also, the aftermarket intake is likely BCW.

if this is a 87 then for 100% this is piston port (no reeds). If the bore is even slightly ovalized the ski will not start under load (in water) - need for a top end rebuild. Without load it will start, but under load most of the mixture will find its way out through the carb (my experiance).

alright so if i cant get it tuned right after a while maybe i should just buy a motor with reeds. cause idk i dont like this idea of not having them ha
