My New Paperweight

94 SJ 701. Just bought the damn thing last summer. Part of the stater busted off and what looks like a bearing racer fell out when we pulled the oil pan off. 3 of the 4 motor mounts were hosed as well. Suffice it to say, this one is going nowhere any time soon. Probably just going to cannibalize it for my 650 (already did that for the carb). I might also try my hand at a Yamaslut hood mod on this one first. Already popped my fiberglass cherry on the 650 hull. I'll post that separately. 20190710_022808463_iOS.jpg20190710_022814285_iOS.jpg20190710_022837240_iOS.jpg20190710_022848473_iOS.jpg

Oil pan?
Maybe crankcase half?

Whatever the hell the bottom of the block is called. The crank wouldn't budge, so there wasn't much for it. I'm new to this whole thing so don't know what all the parts are called. I pulled the cover off of the stater, then pulled the mounts off, then the bearing cage or whatever. When I pulled the cover off the stater, it was already broken. When we pulled the block apart, we saw the bearing racer. I haven't pulled it apart anymore because there's really no point and I've been focusing on my 650 and waverunner. I priced out fixing this one and it's just not worth it. Looking at ~1400 just to get it running.

Confused by this also. The stator would have been easy to replace and would require the engine to be scrapped.

Maybe so, but the crank still won't budge and when we pulled the block apart, the racer fell out. I haven't seen the extent of the damage, but it's locked up somewhere. It's not just the stator.

I gotcha, didn’t see it mentioned in the OP that it the crank was locked up.

Oh yeah. My son tried cranking it out at the river and just heard a nice "clunk". When we got it home, crank would wiggle a little, but I think whatever is in there has wedged itself nicely. I'll eventually pull it apart and see what's what. But right now, no amount of engine rebuild is in the budget anyway.

That engine must have been hard starting or it had other carb problems,
caused by the leaking front main seal. And it must have been making a
Rorrr sound from the rusted main bearings for a long time before it seized.

That ski was thrashed.

Did it have a fuel primer?

Yeah, it had a primer. No hard starts, was running fine. Sounded different than my 650, but figured that was to be expected, and didn't sound "off" to me. I rode it the day it died and didn't notice anything. No carb problems that I know of. In fact, I just stole the carb from the 701 to put on my 650 which was having carb issues. 650 is (was) running fine (now I lost spark, but that's another issue).

That is why I don't like primers. Primers eliminate the symptom (hard starting), but
they do not fix the engine problem that caused the hard starting.

Back in the late 80's and early 90's when Jet ski's were popular, customers would bring
in their 440/550's for tune ups before a vacation, and it was a complaint that the tune
and service was a waste of money. The problem was fixed by carefully evaluating the
Jet Ski before a repair order was written.

It didn't make sense to spend money on a T&S, when the engine needed an overhaul.

The 440/550s became infamous for leaking front main seals. Nearly all of the front main
seals leaked vacuum, but when the front main seal leaked a moderate to high amounts
of vacuum (4.5 to 7.5hg), the leaking main seal would cause carb problems like hard starting.

With the vacuum side of the main seal worn out, the mains seal sucked metal debris (from
the starter), rust, and water directly into the front main bearing.

Then the front main seals would leak up to 7.5psi (average crankcase pressure)

Your Yamaha suffered similar problems (possibly for a couple years). The motor mounts is
a common failure that can be caused by wake jumping.

For your remaining watercraft I encourage you to ask more questions, and maybe you
will be able too recognize a problem before it becomes serious.

86' thru 90' pp 550's had more problems than any 440, and early 550. But they all came
with main seals that started leaking vacuum after 2hrs, during break in.

You’re pricing the parts from the wrong places. Shoot me a message and we can get you on the water for way cheaper. My shop has everything you need.
