New guy with a quick question

I just got me a 2001 Superjet with the 701 and a few goodies.

I have ridden it and so far she runs great but the primer kit was installed half assed.

What I can't figure out is where the best place to mount the primer would be. I'm a little hesitant to drill into the ski by the hood lock because if the primer sticks out there I may hit it while riding the ski. I would like to keep it under the hood if possible. Is there a bracket made for the standard pump primer kit?

Does the stock choke come out by the hood latch I'm guessing? If that's the case mine has been glassed over.

You are never going to kick it or hit it with your foot. Just remove the stock choke knob and put the primer there. Under the hood is no good IMO. Think about if you are on the water and need to prime the engine. You will have to remove the hood pump the primer close and relatch the hood and then try and fire it. If that doesn't work, you do it all again.

Mine never worked right and I guess being tall I just ride in the back of the tray more then most. Dump a little fuel down the carb in the morning and my engine is primed all day.

I have seen multiple plungers broke off, one guy needed stitches because he wasn't wearing shoes when he kicked his plunger primer. I personally have never broke one with my foot. I usually get two years out of my plungers and ride every weekend during the summer, but my ski doesn't need choking/priming very often.

you could also mount the primer on the air intake housing where the arrow is pointing. Just run the primer out line down to the carbs, and run the primer 'in' lines from the fuel line through the intake opening. Works great. I have had my limiting rope take my primer out on the dash as well. The button primers work great to.

gotta have major balls to be doing this lol

kinda opening yourself up for risk of back fire &/OR fire by doing that...

Those metal screens are there to keep debri out but mostly to keep from a backfire FIRE.

just my opinion

thats a valid point, i didn't think of. However, I think the risk is very low that a backfire would ignite the primer line beyond the primer. I did leave the screens in, just ran the primer line thru the screen for each carb. Probably not much different then running a primer line from the dash to the carb...just a longer primer line.

I suppose ride at your own risk there

I have done that myself as a temp fix till the brass primer fitting came in mail... but I personally wouldnt recommend doing it

Thanks for the tips guys. The stock choke location looks like it has been glassed over by the previous owner of my ski.

I am still deciding where I want to mount it. It doesn't bother me under the hood because I only need to prime it once and then it's good for the rest of the day. I have a minki single carb conversion and it seems to run great.

Sadly I haven't even made it through a full tank of gas though without costly repairs. The first one was the PO had the water hoses lightly rubbing the coupler and they sprung a leak. The bilge wiring was crappy and they shut off at the same time. Almost totally sunk the ski in 15 min of riding.

My second trip out after fixing this the driveshaft decided to strip out. This time I had to get a tow in by a fisherman.

All while still trying to learn to ride. Damn this is an expensive sport!
