I am tired of the dirt bike and quad. I have been eying a stand up for many years. The dealer has a 2007 SXR on the floor for $4500.00 new, I am sure I can go see Yamaha for the superjet(2008) when its out if its worth waiting for??? But I would think its alot more $$$

I am 2 hours from the surf, 20 minutes from the lake. Grew up in southern Cali surfing and love the ocean. Im sure If this is anything like my quads or bikes, I will ride this thing hard.....

What route do I go??? How do I find other riders in the Texas area?

Great forum... I look forward to the help and making a friend or two!

4500 for a new SXR is a pretty good deal. just make sure they don't have any hidden "dealer fees". The best I've seen an SXR go for is 5250 OTD (w/out a trailer).

As far as what ski to go with, it's pretty simple...

If you think you are more likely to get into racing then go with an SXR and if you think you are more into freeriding/freestyle(doing tricks) then pick up a new superjet. Not sure how the 08 sj is going to do on the race course, but it might give the SXR a run for it's money as long as no Hydrospaces show up.

Check the Lonestar Freeride subforum for TX riders, free rides, etc. The next ride is the end of this month at Crystal Beach.

Hey Penguin, post him a link!

Ok , that makes sence. I dont have any interest in racing, i can see surfing and doing big tricks alot more fun. I am 6'2 about 210 lbs. Am I better off buying the cheaper SXR and moding it if needed, or spending more on the stock superjet?

ok, If buying a used ski is like buying a used dirtbike, IM REALLY SCARED... I bought a few crappy SUCKER DEALS for dirt bikes when I first got into it...

How do I know if I am getting a rag or something worth the money!?!

My 1st ski was the cheapest thing I could find. The 650SX isn't the best ski in the world, but I haven't ridden the best ski in the world, so I don't know any better.

I don't think finding a test ride is going to help you make a decision. It took a lot more than a 15 min test ride to get comfy with a stand up. A test ride will probably only do you good if you can handle the ski enough to appriciate it. The ski that is the easiest to ride as a beginner is the ski you'll outgrow the fastest. It would be a bias comparision.

If I could do it again, be myself in your shoes, I would have bought a '94 or newer SJ (94 was the 1st year with the 701 as I understand it, and newer is often more reliable) and then bummed some test rides after I got comfy with a stand up. (I haven't gotten to ride the SJ, but I bet it lives to it hype.)

I wish I would have known I'd enjoy stand ups as much as I did when I initally had the $$ to invest.

I was looking for a classified section on the forum, but didnt see one. Does someone have a link?

So what price range should I be expecting for a good ski used?

you can get a good ski ready to ride for 4-5 grand depending on the year
and what is done to it. youll deff want footholds,b-pipe,head,msd,porting,lighened flywheel,ya know stuff like that. just look at the hull for cracks and that it is clean not all cobbled together and u should be fine i know there are like 2-3 different ones on the stuff for sale forum
but ya dont buy a new one you will have 10grand into it before its even a respecful ski it doesnt take long
good luck

footholds,b-pipe,head,msd,porting,lighened flywheel,

Isn't that a bit excessive? I mean, he could go out and have a good time on a stock ski if he wants. Those things would be nice, but I don't think they would be needed.

Hey, if you want a bad ass, top notch ski that is pulling power and handling from every hidden crevice the ski has to offer, ya... but otherwise, I bet he'll be just fine if he finds something mostly stock, with a pipe and some nice handling mods. He could always do a hood mod and install foot holds. Things like 0 degree bars are relitivly inexpensive, and when something isn't too expensive, it's not a bad thing to go pick the part that suits you best.

I have to say, if i came accross a good deal of a ski with MSD, flywheel, some carbon, holds, and w/e else, i'd be all over it too, but in the average scenario, I think a pipe and some handling mods would suffice. The more you mod it, the less reliable it's going to be. MSD is going to be one of the things higher on the list that can effect reliability, I think. A head and porting are defanitly on the decreased engine life list.

I went by the dealership today. I would be looking at 5100.00 bucks out the door after tax and "shipping charge???" for the SXR.

To me, thats pretty damn cheap for a new ski. Am I going to hate this thing and feal like I should have stuck it out for a SJ???

I have a budget of 8-9k total that I can spend. The dealership said they only had 3 SJ last season, and only have 3 on order for this season as well and that 1 is already taken by an employee. Still looking at 2-3 months until they arrive. Thats really going to blow waiting that long for a summertime sport. I dont mind the wetsuit, but I would think alot of people are out in the summer...

Thanks for all the imput, your guys have been great!!
