New to game

I just bought 2 SJ550's.
1 is just a hull and the second hasn't ran in 8 years. So I know the 1 atleast needs its carb redone and fresh gas 50:1 ratio. Any other tips to get this back to a fine working machine? The other I going to fix hull up and make it shine and decide if I want to throw a conversion kit on it or keep it stock. Any tips or after market products to help keep it running well let me know.

Best tip i can give you is don't use the sites search engine. Use google and put this after your search criteria. Example "SJ550 build thread site:www.x-h2o.com"

The "site:www.x-h2o.com" will just search this site, and give you a lot better results than the baked in forum search. Never owned anything prior to a 99 SJ so otherwise can't help you much sorry!

Start off doing a compression test. There's a lot of arguments as to what stock compression is, but mine stock at 4400 ft elevation was 120 psi after complete rebuild. Next do a leakdown test of the engine. Then when the motor is good to go, go find a used SBN44 and get rid of the BN44... once those go bad there's no bringing em' back... runs better, starts better and easy to tune. go get the head milled .030 off which will bump them compression up slightly and help it start and run better as well as give you a little more torque. check your pump and driveshaft bearings too.
