newest installment of "my ski isnt running right"

i feel like ive posted this same thread for every ski i've owned lately.

particulars:

new to me 97 superjet 62t with b pipe, "aftermarket reeds"(?) prop. everything else, as far as i know, is stock.
ski runs great from 1/2 throttle on up. when slowing to turn or whatever when it takes off it feels fat/blubbery. not terrible but not light in the ass-end like i know it should.
when i bought the ski i noticed it was doing this but it had a/m breathers and guy said it had sat awhile so i figured a known good set of stock 38's which i had laying around would cure this issue. no luck. same gutless bottom end and pops to life once i get up to mid rpm range. (the carbs i took off where very clean too)

ive tried adjusting mixture screws with mild success with closing low speed 1/4 turn or so. plugs look a little rich especially the back plug. i dont know jet sizes or pop off pressures or size of n&s but again, the carbs on there now were ripping on a different ski with b pipe.

any thoughts on things to check. florence is coming to town and id really like to have a runner....

ive got 4 superjets and none of them are ripping like they are supposed to :(

Could be a variety of things. If you believe the carbs and fuel are not the issue, the simplest things to try to rule out are fuel filter (try bypassing), res/on fuel switch (try bypassing), fuel lines (replace), pulse line (unlikely, replace), fuel tank vent (make sure it is clear), replace spark plugs (not likely in this case, but you never know, cheap and easy).
Other possibilities get you into time and money... like plug wires, CDI, etc.. but if you swap from your other Superjets....
I do have to say that the symptoms you describe do sound like more of a carb tuning / rebuild issue.. Do the carbs you took off, work ok on another ski?

Half way through beach day I bypassed fuel filter and fuel selector switch as suggested above and it did run quite a bit better. If it was at 60% before it was at 85% after. Still not perfect but it made the ski fun versus frustrating.

* tank vent seemed to be doing what it's supposed to(air in not out)

Check your pop off and if you have something stuck in your intake grate/pump. *Use anything to pump air into the fuel "in" while blocking the "out" nipple. And you want to see a crisp POP. If it fizzles at all you need to replace the oring or the needle. (use wd40 to lube the needle).

well the fix was short lived. issue showed back up yesterday 1/2 way through beach day. first session it was at the doable 80% 2nd session it was at the unridable 40 then 20% then back up to 40. last night i checked my spark plug wires and sure enough one had a broken section, trimmed back to good. confidently went back to beach today. still stuck at 80% but that was short lived. 2nd session was back down to 60%. one of the best wave days in years too. at least first session was pretty fun. i'll keep trying to figure it out. seems electical to me. ???

A simple check. Pull the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Measure resistance between the wires. (Need to insert the ohm meter probes into the metal part of the boots). Should be around 4200 ohms (4.2k). If not, wires likely need to be replaced. Coil could be bad too, but apparently the coils rarely fail.
Could be the CDI as well. If you can pull one from another ski to test you can find out. Could do this with the coil and spark plug wires as well.

i always thought cdi's were either good or no spark. do they also exhibit poor running as well. the skis seems to come to life on the top end when i bang around on chop. like buuuuuuuuhhhhh then hit chop and braaaaaaaap. but as soon as i get off the gas its back to being a dog.

i tried checking last night with my multi meter. i put it on ohms 20k read 1 when not touching then 0 when u hold probes together. put them in each boot and it never moved off 1 ???

Hmmm... the meter should really not readout as 1 when probes are not touching anything. This is an open circuit and usually reads something like OL for Open Loop. I would check the batteries in your meter, and/or use a different meter.

I think that depends on the meter, my meter does the same as his, says 1 when it's an open circuit. If it's not moving off '1' I'd say the wires are broken.

agreed but when i checked the wires one was solid and one had about a 2 inch section that pulled out and then was solid behind that...
