Nose dilemma

Alrighty so first and foremost I realize the simple solution to this issue is complete the bloody backflip with your head out of the water, but until that time does anyone have any advice of how to keep your nose/sinus clear after a day of riding.

It's taking me approx 3-4 days after riding to finally be able to breathe out of both nostrils and I'm getting sick of it. Going to try an antihistamine today but I'm doubtful and would rather not be taking meds.

Going to head to the drug store for the weekend and see noseplug options as well.

Curious to hear of peoples solutions or ways of coping.

Thanks

Mike

first thing i do coming out of the water is blow out of my nose. My nostrils are usually clearer after a ride than before. If that doesnt work id suggest noseplugs.

Go to a walk in clinic and get a shot of depo-medrol. My allergies are so bad I can't work, eat, taste my food, or stop touching my face anytime it's shorts weather. It won't stop all symptoms but it sure helps.

I have suffered from the same problem for years. One day i realized after riding at the beach versus the lake i dont seem to be as bad after riding in salt water. The best solution i have found is use a netty pot as soon as you possibly can and flush ur sinuses with the salt packets. It clears me up in a few hours versus 4 to 5 days. Hope this helps..

Over the years, my sinuses have been getting worse and worse. Particularly bad is my body's ability to restore flow to the sinus passage that connects my nasal cavity to my left ear. Riding my skis, or falling rather, used to make my problem 10x worse, until (knock on wood) this year. Here is what I've done since April:

1. Daily Flosnase 2x squirts in each nostril (you'll need a script, but I hear Nasonex OTC is a similar steroid.)
2. Daily single pill of Singulair (you'll need a script.)
3. Before riding, I usually take a 12hr dose of Sudafed.
4. I never blow my nose. Ever. Instead, I pinch my nose closed and draw my breath in to create negative pressure that pulls water/snot from my sinuses into the back of my throat, then spit as needed.
5. I don't always sleep, but when I do, I only sleep on my right side, allowing my left ear to drain as I rest.

As a result, I have yet to get that "water in the ear" feeling that I used to get every time I got off my ski. For me, this feeling would last for a couple days and would often result in some kind of sinus infection. I've also manage to dodge the cold that struck my wife and kids a few weeks back.

Go pick this up. Much easier than the Nedipot.

I tried the neti pot and the NeilMed sinus rinse for several years, but it made my particular problems worse. Yes, there was some immediate, short-term relief, but they seemed to prolong my sinus infections by a week or two. I should also note that I wear a helmet with good ear protection when I ride so, my issues may stem from water rushing in through my nose rather than through my ears. Your sinus cavities are as unique as your finger prints, and I suspect that mine just can't tolerate water coming in through my nose. I don't know for sure, but I feel like the pressure forces mucus upward, against the natural flow, and creates a stubborn clog. I've gone to five different physicians and specialists over the past seven years, and so far, the regimen listed above is the only thing that has worked.

I too was very reluctant to take daily meds, but I finally gave in. Again, this is just my personal experience, and your results may vary.

I guess were going to have to get some 5 star wild wings or a wasabi dinner after rides. that poop will clear a sinus infection.

I used to do that to, but like I said earlier, I never blow my nose anymore. Nowadays, I just hock up street oysters and spit out baby jelly fish for the ducks to eat.
