Yep until the late 80's , early 90's Jets skis were a very niche market , the stand up jets skis still are.
You didn't see mass appeal and really large numbers of jet skis till 1988 , in 86 Kawasaki dropped the X2 making it the first mass produced Japanese sit down watercraft that could carry two people , in 1987 Yamaha came out with the WR500 and the WJ500 the second two sit down watercraft , in 88 the Seadoo SP580 came out and it was much faster than anything else out there though not very reliable , then in 89 Kawasaki came out with the TS650 , followed by the Waverunner lll in 1990 and Seadoo came out with the GT the first two three person skis to hit the market.
Around 91 things really got cooking Seadoo released the XP which was the fastest ski on the water at the time. Kawasaki drops the Sea couch , Yamaha puts the 650 engine in a WR500 body and calls it an LX , from there is just exploded and the Seadoo goes from two model in 1990 to 6 models in 93 ,
Now the HP war begins and we get into the modern jet ski era HP jumps to 80 hp in the Seadoo GTX and XP models ,Kawasaki counters with the SS and XI models both with 750 engines , Yamaha releases the Waveblaster and the PRO VXR with the 701 engine.
93-94 and 95 probably saw the biggest jet ski sales numbers of any years , it was the heyday for the industry and I was right in the middle of it all .
