Freestyle Open Helmet Experience Discussion

I ride about 99.9% flatwater and have always worn a helmet. But in the last two weeks I've had a couple screw ups. They're my screw ups, but they have me considering a Lacrosse helmet.

Both mess ups were flip attempts. Basically me just hucking it off of too small of a set up wake and not doing it right anyways.... But ya have to go for it! So sometimes when I go 3/4 and ogger in the ski basically rips out of my hands. Not often, but once in a while. So the ski basically bobs back up and rolls over and when I'm semi under water I can't see what the ski is doing. And it's usually scheming a way to sneak through my helmet and smack me around a bit.

So after getting a hole through my lip two weeks ago and a cut eyebrow yesterday, I'm kinda thinking a Lacrosse helmet might not be a bad idea. It's weird though... Never happened til 2 weeks ago.

Thoughts and experiences?

I do flops, I try to practice flips when I'am fresh only, if I am fatigued I skip it cause I'll be more likely to make a bigger mistake and get hurt. I do hold onto the bars under water until I have a feel for where the rest of the ski is and I'am coming up then once up I'll let go. I've been thinking of that helmet a little too, I've almost hit my face on the poll and the poll base trying to recover, lol... I've since shortened the poll 4 more inches and moved the footholds nearly all the way forward. I know what you mean though

what do you wear now?

My helmet has only stopped my ski from hitting my face once. About 4 or 5 other times my ski will hit my head when I'm in the water after a failed whatever. Totally worth it either way.

The cascade lacrosse helmets are very nice, I have been meaning to pick up a cpx-r on a local used site, just been lazy lately.

I cracked my head a few times on the bond rail and hood attempting rolls. I won't try it again until I get the helmet.

Wearing a 661 now. I honestly love the helmet, it just doesn't protect my face. Both times I got hit, I was separated from the ski. If it's a slow low flip It's very hard to let go, but if I hit the wake going faster and come up short, the ski oggers in and stops and I keep going forward. I can't hang onto those unfortunately. One thing that does help in that situation though, is to have the bars pulled in. It only happens when I go in extended.

But still... You just never know when the ski is going to bob n roll around above you when you're under water. I always have my eyes open under water watching. Yesterday I saw it coming at the last second and tried to turn away, but failed lol! As soon as it happened, i was like FFFFFinA!. Dangit! Got up and kept riding, but it didn't want to stop leaking and it was getting all in my eye, so headed in.

Good looking helmet amitchel!

I had a Bell Bellistic and loved it, but it got to smelling pretty funky. Very happy with my 661's fit and look. It feels very light too. But I think I'm going to pick up a Lacrosse helmet real soon. Hoping to find somewhere around here to try one on first.

Just a thought but I wear a bmx helmet from Walmart that I screwed a tinted motorcycle visor to the front of. Everyone says I look like Darth Vader when I'm out riding but it protects my face and keeps all the spray out if my eyes so it's all good! Lol I'll snap a pic of it when I get home

I wonder how the visibility is with the full face BMX, how bad is it to see thru the water spots and does it fog up from heat off the face and head, breathing etc ?

I looks nice
