I have seen some different things about plasti dip paint and I couldnt figure out what to do with a 650sx that was hideous to start with.Everyone has a different story about this stuff and I had to try it for myself. I bought a already painted sj hull from a buddy and am building that motor wise but didnt get the paint experience. The 650 was a complete running ski before I started just needed paint. Im going to use it as a buddy ski. Anyway, I peeled stickers off for like 8 hours (you dont understand how many stickers were on this thing) and sanded it down really well with three different grits of sand paper. Then I went to advanced and bought the PLASTI DIP!!
I started with the first coat and it was SO RUNNY. I had to barely spray the ski and let it dry for like an hour or two. I was thinking man this isnt going to work. So I start on the second coat and its starting to stick much better now, I also let this coat sit for an hour. I put the third coat on pretty heavy (not scared of it running at this point) and let it sit overnight. I came back the next day and MAN it looks completely different. It has a flat bedliner look to it, I think it looks really cool. I added 2 more coats to the ski, you can put as much as you want on it at this point because of the texture I just wanted to make sure it was covered evenly well.
So, I let this dry and come back and the plasti dip is still a little grippy and feels like if I rubbed it hard enough it will probably come off (which is the whole point of plasti dip). I get online and start reading ricer forums and they are all talking about how they paint all kinds of different colors on top of the plasti dip. I looked at numerous pictures, and read stuff on how it comes off still. So I got some white epoxy appliance paint from home depot and man its some sticky stuff. I sprayed the ski and if you dont but the second coat on in 30 minutes it has to sit for a week. I have been told buy the paint guy at home depot if you dont do it within 30 minutes (with this paint) it messes up the curing process. So, I think im 3 days in to the week long drying process and it made me a believer, its still a little tacky lol. The ski looks cool though. It looks textured, but not in a crappy rattle can look (more like bedliner). I tried in a very small spot on the pole to peel it off and its kind of hard to get started but it peels off! There are more ways to make it look like a really good paint job with expensive clear coats, but if you wanna do that I would probably just paint it. I spent about $60 bucks on paint and my ski looks pretty cool. It also makes for a great protective coating being its pretty much made out of rubber. This being my buddy ski this concept works out perfect if they hit docks my ski is fine lol.
So for indecisive people like myself, plasti dip is amazing. You can try out different colors of paint and really get good at paint because if you dont like it just peel it off and start over
Im going to try and post all the pictures today. If you have always heard of plasti dip and wondered hope this helps.
