Pro Level Barrell Roll

When I watch clips of pro level riding, most of what they consider a "barrel roll" is more of what I would consider a "360" spin style move. It's not quite a flat spin 360 because there is a bit of inversion to it, but not quite a true barrel roll where the ski passes totally over the rider. Is there any reason behind this? Not bashing pro level riding, just curious.

The barrell rolls that the Freaks, Chans, DVX/KDX's do is more of a tail whip. the rotation is around the axis of the nose. Not the length of the ski. Superjets roll along this axis. The design of the current flat water ski's makes the attitude of the rolls more a whip than anything.

I actually feel my freak rolls perfectly flat. It's all body position. Also the bigger you go the more flared out it tends to get as you stand to slow rotation. I prefer my rolls totally flat though. Get over the bars and keep the shoulder down and it should stay flat. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1410234658.166763.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1410234666.883101.jpg

I suck but the cleanest ones I've made and seen done is hit it hard and fast get forward over the hood try to kiss the nose and take a look at the front of the intake grate.
Kahuna has/had a great roll form. :) he should have a few pics.

to do a real barrel roll, you need to spin the ski parallel with the water. that takes forward momentum/speed. the pros arent getting a speed run at their setup wake, so the ski goes up instead of forward and around and the ass end circles around the nose like the hands on the clock.

That makes sense, the forward momentum/speed is what flattens out the ski in the air making it more parallel with the water. Never really looked at it that way before.

I think where the style of riding has gone makes competitors "roll" the way we do.
You can't go into a flip from the old barrel roll, you land too flat and over the nose. Also tricks like scare crows are near impossible doing old school rolls.
People also want to see you go high, in order to go high you must jump up, then pitch the ski over which results in the axis being around your head and the nose of the ski.
I personally hate the old parallel rolls.

The bad part is most people can't tell a difference and just call everything a helicopter. When really no body does a helicopter. If anyone can remember Rok did the first helicopter at world finals many years ago in like 2008 or 2009. Nobody does those anymore

I have been saying the same thing to myself the past few years. I think the old style rolls look much more technical. The ones Now they don't look like they take much skill.

You'd be surprised, just riding a Pro level ski is harder than one would think.
I've put a number of people on my ski who have been riding for many many years, half can hardly get up and the rest turn right back around and give it back to me.
The people riding make it look easy. Work with the ski, not against it.

I'd love to try but I'd be too afraid to sink one. Lol. My wallet isn't up to par with the big $$$$$ flatwater boats.
