Pro-tec Performance

I have been doing a LOT of business with Pro-tec over the last 2 months. I went through them for everything that i needed for my engine. They did all of my machine work and I had them do a crank rebuild also. In the last couple months I spent about 800 dollars there.

I built an R&D flattop engine and I send them the domes because the compression readings were 205 and I wanted them to be about 190-195. I called them and explained it all and then sent a letter to. This is the letter I sent with the ADA domes.

These domes are for an R&D flattop setup.

Current Overall Squish: .035
Overall Squish Desired: .055

Current Compression: 205psi
Desired Compression: 190psi

If you have any questions feel free to give me a call.

When I got the domes back they were still reading right around 205, so I decided to run it and see if the compression would go down (I know, it should go up if anything). After the ride I checked it again and it was at 215!!

I immediately called protec and talked to Carl and the machine guy. They both told me that they took out enough material to bring the compression to 190. The machine guy told me he took out the .02 for the squish and that should have been enough to lower the compression. He then said I can sent it back and pay another 45 bucks per dome to fix it!! I hung up the phone, and called ART AT JETWORKS!! He is the man, he knew EXACTLY what he was talking about and ordered me a set of ADA domes and did the machine work for the squish and got me the desired compression for only 20 more bucks than protec.

After that I cancelled my credit card payment to protec. Art and a couple other people told me that just taking out .02 for the squish is not enough.

Fast forward to today… I get a message on my phone from Carl saying to call him. I call him and he starts saying how I shouldn’t have canceled the payment, they would have helped me out with the costs. I told him I asked and they said that I had to cover 100% of it. He then changed subjects and I got him to admit that just taking out the squish would not lower the compression that much. I then informed him that the machine guy told me several times that he did not touch the domes, he only messed with the squish. The conversation ended with Carl suppose to be talking to the machine guy, and calling me back. He never ended up calling me back all day. All in all, I will never do business with protec again!!

ART AT JET WORKS WILL BE GETTING ALL MY MACHINING BUSINESS FROM NOW ON!!!

Just got off the phone with the owner, who is a complete dickhead by the way. He told me that they did what I asked and im pretty much an idiot. He also said that .02 of squish equates to 1.5cc which is not true. Carl and Art at jet works both told me that that is not true. I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH PROTEC AGAIN!!!

Good to know. I didn't care much for my conversations with Pro tec on the phone either.

Art at jetworks seems very cool and I talked to him for about 30 minutes before ordering my brand new B pipe from him.

If they want to stay in the industry they really need to get their act together.... People really dont care about their history as much as they care about the customer support!!

Never had any problem with them. Except when I ordered 1 o-ring kit they sent two. Its hard to get good service in this area since it is so small and nobody is making money.

I really dont think this thread is fair.. there is too much info missing..
1. taking .02 off the squish will not raise your comp. 10 psi !?!?! <- gauge ?
2. it sounds like they built the engine for you or did the mechine work but ?
3. when you checked the comperssion the 1st. time and got 205 were the rings seated ? (maybe you were going to be about 240 psi) bad gauge ?

sounds to me like a case of you telling them what to do insted of giving them all the info and letting them do what needs to be done..

stroker ? big bore ? port timing ? cc's of domes ? etc..

nothing personal and only my .02

I understand butch....

to answer your questions....

1. It did not raise my compression until after the rings seated (which is what i wanted, but the compression was never lowered to the 190PSI that i wanted before rings seat.) THEY ALSO TOLD ME COMPRESSION DOESNT GO UP ON 2 STROKES WHEN RINGS SEAT!!!!

2. I built the engine and had them do the domes.

3. The rings were not seated, i didnt want to run it with that high of compression, I was using oil on the bore everytime i switched the domes. I was also checking compression the correct way (they even agreeed with that). The guage is my buddys brand new top of the line snap-on that he uses for all his AWESOME engines. He keeps that thing working right!

4. I gave them the info, iI pasted the info that i gave them above. When i talked to them after i cancelled the CC they said that they dont know about flat tops and they were just guessing. I asked why i wasnt informed about that before sending my stuff to them and paying 100 dollars.

This is for my R&D big bore flat top on the original 85mm bore.

And to awnser bad93blaster.... I have been buying all of my random parts through them, i had them rebuild my crank which was about 350 alone (which they also ripped me off on, but thats another story!). I got the cylinder from my buddy.
