Pro-Tec trim system

I've got a used Raider one coming for my freestyle Superjet. It (along with several others I notice) has the turn nozzle cut shorter. He is including the cut off piece so I can weld it back on.
Question: 1.) Why is everybody cutting the nozzle shorter?
If it's agreed that I should weld it back on, I'll probably need to machine the bore over the weld area at least. 2.) Do I keep it the same diameter as original or go with something larger. Or, it's just the turn nozzle and it doesn't really matter?
Thanks for the input!

OK, I have the trim setup in front of me now. I will weld the end of the nozzle back on. I assume people cut them for clearance with the hull. I think I'll get great throw even with a full length nozzle. After reading a bunch of other threads, I think the diameter to go for is 85mm. I'm modifying this for max up throw so I'll probably end up trimming the lip of the hull at the back. Any other thoughts are welcome.
