Proper Spray Paint method?

I started spraying my lower hull today with krylon white indoor/outdoor primer.
Although i know its a primer, ive noticed it get alot smoother and glossy like if i spray it thick, but its more likely to run. Yet if i spray it thin, the coats go on even but dont gloss up. Should i just keep putting on layers as thin as i can or try to find a balance point between thick and thin?

Also, i noticed some fiber like debris on the hull while i was spraying. Is this from lack of a clean area, or the spray paint coming out in fibers? it comes off easily, but im worried about it happenening when i do my final gloss white. It seems to be mostly on the nose of the ski. The are was sanded with 180 grit, but isnt completly smooth. I didnt have the patience to fix the many scratches on the bottom.

Any tips?

Did you clean the spraying area with an acetone after sanding? And thin coats have less (water like chemical) in them to evaporate away, while a thick coat has more, making it look glossier and taking longer to dry/set.

i have painted well over a 100 cars and still mess up some times.
to dry will hold water look like crap to, to wet will shrink and crack when you use real paint

I wiped the area down with prep-all twice and blow it off with a air compressor twice. But i didnt really look to see if those where there before. The fibers look like they could be just strings of the spray paint.

Agreed! I think it's even harder with spray paint because you can't adjust anything to meet your needs. Just have to start spraying and hope you pick up the method really quick.

Just remember, it's primer, it's not supposed to look perfect on application since it's supposed to be lightly sanded before painting anyway.

yeah i know, im just trying to get a solid technique down before i go for the paint.
I used two cans of primer on the bottom, i might do one more of primer then 1-2 or gloss white. Then probably 4-5 cans of primer and 2 of gloss on the top. Im hoping it turns out decent considering its spray paint. Im thinking white gloss with black turf in the tray and rails plus a flat black pole should look decent for a <$30 paint job

I used the Krylon on my 650SX - Rolled it on its side, sanded hull with 320 I think then wiped with acetone. Taped it off and sprayed it I think about 4 coats white. No primer; it held up for a few years, when I sold it aside from a few scratches/chips it was fine.

I sprayed painted my 750 last winter. The clear I used is starting to look ugly and it peeled from the paint. I think my spray can job cost over $50. When I sprayed it more professionally with a spray gun, it cost me about $10-$15 in paint. Something to think about since it sounds like you have an air compressor.
