Rear shortened superjet results

There is a lot of talk over the years of how much people have chopped off the rear bottom deck on superjets but let's compile results. I'm sure i'm not the only one who has struggled determining how much to shorten a superjet. Please reply answering the following questions.

1-How much have you chopped off the rear of you sj?

2-How did the rear chop change the ski? Did it still plane out, was it too nose high, loss of handling with speed, etc.

3-How much do you weigh?

4-What would you do different, if anything?

My goal is to still be able to plane out in the upper rpm range but would like to get the nose up for surf.

Thanks for your time, I hope this helps others in the future.

My pole is -3, with a -1 umi and 0* bars. That was good for bouys.

I won a jetlabs ovp and bought rrp straight bars. That effectively made me -6 from stock. It made bouys worse, the back end looser, but improved low speed stability, I can almost stop in flatwater and stay up. Surf the more forward position made it more nimble in the same way it made racing worse.

My hull is stock and I think if I rode surf enough I would consider shorter, but cant say for sure. I do know shorter would give up the surf/bouy compromise I have now.

I rode a shortened rockered superjet in Daytona. I'd have to ask how much on the shorten and the pole but it was no longer than mine and I would have certainly gone shorter on the pole.

Superjet:
1) 4" off bottom deck, full length topdeck, tray and rear bondline
2) Quicker turns, slightly more nose high at low speeds, planed out fine, recovered from big airs easily handled WFO pretty well, not much worse than a full length SJ
3) 160
4) Nothing

XFT, carbon SJ:
1) 5" off bottom deck, tray and topdeck cut flush
2) Quicker turn, much more nose high, doesn't recover as easily handles WFO okay but the light hull weight gets squirrly
3) 160
4) I didn't cut this hull, if I had, I would have left some extra length in the tray

IMO unless you are trying to build a super budget backflip ski and are adding nose rocker, cutting the tray super short is detrimental to the way the ski feels. A full length tray (or maybe -1" or -2" at most) makes for a better freeride ski.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have even posted in this thread. I miss read and thought you were asking about handle pole lengths. I've only ridden a shortened SJ once and am not even sure how short it was, -5 maybe.

It's cool man, handle pole length definatly plays a big role too so it was worth mentioning.

1 Rode a friends- 4
2- Rode nose high, did plane out took a little longer. Still had good handling, pretty squirrelly fun, might be tough to learn in surf
3- 165
4- Imo i think a - 2 would be perfect

1-I had a -4 RN also rockered it at the same time so can only comment on the combo. Widened the tray at the same time.
2- Night and day difference
Riding in the surf it didn't pearl and flipped waves easy even small ones.
Wot pretty good , a little nose high still planed out easy. Also noticed it was a little harder to board from deep water
3- 6'1 200lbz -4 pole as well
4- I would have tried tubbies

It was really fun but not nearly as good as an AM surf hull. Plan on spending a chunk of money it adds up quick and a lot of time to do it right. Prob had at least a 100 hrs in labor every spare second and all weekend long for 2 months. Gotta way time vs money but most people wanting to do this are prob on smaller budgets like I was.

Along with time and money, you gotta ask yourself if you really want to cut up a nice roundnose.. Thinking it would be a lot easier to sell the RN hull and you're probably over half way to a used aftermarket that would be a lot lighter and designed to be short and rockered from the start.

This isnt a debate thread on if it should be done.

Thanks for everyone's input so far.
