While carbon looks cool and is going to be lighter... its super pricey and relatively hard to get a hold of.

If you can get the carbon for a decent price, go with it. Otherwise, glass is going to be great to use.

carbon isnt that hard to get a hold of. The two places I've bought from that have carbon and glass of all different kinds readily avaliable is fiberlay and us composites. Use two layers of 12oz. Biax then cover it with carbon. I used 17oz on both skis that I have re-enforced and even though it is strong and a quick re-enforcement, it is hard to form around curves and edges because it is so thick, you get a lot of air bubbles and and its hard to get it to stick around edges and stuff. If you work with carbon work with at least a 12oz carbon because anything lighter is hard to work with, it is hard to keep light carbon consistent and hard to keep it from pulling apart. I used a 5oz 2x2 twill over my glass and it was very hard to work with. I ordered 12oz 2x2 twill and it was so much easier to use. So after typing that it seems that 12oz everything is pretty much key for re-enforcing.

The real question is: Do you NEED to reinforce? Or are you doing it because everyone here says its the thing to do?

And... how much MORE do you want to make your ski weigh? Reinforcement is adding WEIGHT to your ski... if its a surf ski, knock yourself out... if flatwater, I'd think about it real hard...

Thats true, re-enforcing the hell out of your ski is really not necessary unless your in surf. There's very mild stuff you would need for flatwater.
