How many layers should I use.

1 layer of 17oz bi-axial mat
or
2 layers of 12oz bi-axial mat?

I have done the research, just need to know if I one layer will be enough.

This is what I will do:

1) grind ribs
2) Fill bond line with epoxy resin and 404 High Density Filler (optional chopped fiberglass, not sure how to do that).
3) As the filler cures, begin with 4" strip of 8.7oz Fiberglass Cloth Tape (E-Glass) or cut strip of 17 or 12 oz biaxial mat (whichever I buy).
4) after that follow with 1 layer of 17oz bi-axial mat or 2 layers of 12oz.

I will allow all of this to cure at one time, not do it in stages.

depends i guess.

im gonna go with fill the bond line with west and 404.

add a strip of 6 inch 17oz tape.

then do a full layer of 17oz, then finish with a layer of 4 oz e glass to smooth it out.

that should be more than sufficient.

remember this...if you go with to much the pipe wont fit......its a pain-in-the-ass lesson.

So, should I pray one layer of 17oz will be sufficient?

as long as you ground the ribs off you will be fine... i doubt you will be laying 1/4"+ of reinforcing in there.

I did my square with a 3" strip of 8.9 oz, then a 6" strip of 8.9 oz, then the entire side from hood seal to bottom with 17 oz... and only ground the 2 or 3 ribs that affect the chamber... in fact, i only ground them down about 1/2 way (of their original thickness) just to make room for the reinforcement.

Doing the same thing to my round nose now... except I am using Texalium (sp) and also since I already have stress cracks at the bond line I am also laying a 2" strip on the outside, under the bond line area to help add a little more strength.

just make sure to sand the sides good to make sure you have a good surface to adhere too... and all residual mold release, dirt, grease etc is off. Make sure to work all extra epoxy out too... you don't want air bubbles, or puddles of epoxy... those will be weak points.

i think you will be fine. if the ribs are ground down. if the pipe doesn;t hit the ribs before you grind them down i can't see how side panels are gonna make it rub.

but i don't own a b pipe so i can't verify.

worst case it does rub you have to sand away enough so it doesn;t rub.

I use 1 layer 17 oz nytex with west system then 1 layer 8 oz carbon fiber with aluzine to make it look good. Bond line is filled with west system and cavasil and micro balloons mixed to consistinsy of peanut butter. Good luck!

i bought some ebay carbon a few months ago for my fx-1...I did 1 layer of 17oz biax, then 1 layer of carbon kevlar...filled the bondline with marine bondo

i dont remember the name of the person I bought it from, but it was from Canada...

I used:

Bondline filled with 8lb density foam.

Ribs removed

single layer of 19 oz 2+2 Carbon fiber. West systems epoxy.

Reinforced with several layers of glass cloth around the hood opening. Make sure you hit that area up. Alot of cracks start there.

Its gonna be better than nothing for sure. I would think with the 404 and 4" strip under it that it would be sufficient for freeride, but from how high and how hard you plan on landing on side of boat? I guess this would be different for many people, if your Pete or Slut maybe 2 layers of 17oz. I plan to use foam in bond line a 6" strip of chop and 1 layer of carbon kevlar and also reinforce under the hood seal area.
