Removing broken bolts

Since I am working on an old ski that has been ridden in salt for many years, I have bolts snapping off left and right.

A few questions....

(0) A bolt like the one shown in the picture... would you expect better luck with penetrating oil or the torch.

(1) I thought that from now on I would use a thorough dose of Loctite on all bolts that come in contact with water, not so the bolts don't fall out, but to prevent corrosion. Would this help?

(2) When one of these rusted old bolts does come out, the nut that it goes into (embedded in the hull) must be in equally terrible shape. Is there anything that should be done to it before putting a new bolt back in? Wire brush? Run a tap (die??) through it?

I would soak that bolt in penetrating oil and use some vise grips.

A torch might damage the SMC and epoxy holding the brass insert.

If that doesn't work you can always drill a hole through the center and use an extractor.

use grease or threadsealer. dont use threadlocker you will kick urself in th ehead later if you do that. soak it in penetrating oil overnight and heat it up with the torch, you might get a little burnmark around the bolthole but it wont hurt anyhting.

ive got that same problem but on a larger scale... 2 ride plate bolts and 2 pump bolts... im gunna try for alittle while but if all else fails im just gonna holesaw right around it and figerglass it back in when all fixed.

if the bolt is frozen into the threaded inserts, you can usually pull the whole assemblys out, remove the bolt and epoxy the inserts back into the hull. it's a bitch, but it's better than cutting out a big hole to have to patch up.

Mcmaster carr sells the brass threaded inserts that they used to call oversize ride plate inserts,I found them on their site after doing a little digging and no one sells them as ride plate inserts anymore

if the bolt is sticking out that much try to use a small pipe wrench, but be careful not to twist the bolt off as the wrench will grab it hard after the initial locking on to it.
