Replacement ring gear?

I was talking to Jetinetics a while ago and they were going to sell me a ring gear, but they weren't making any for about 6 months. I'd give them a call and see what they say.

Any more news on this. I'm about ready to install the flywheel, but would like a new ring gear. I hate to install it the way it is. What would happen if I heated the ring gear and spun it about 30%. That would move the pressure to the new teeth. I don't even know it the ring gear is a press fit or how it's installed if some one could enlighten me I might try something.

You could remove your ring gear and flip it over. I bet the one side is worn more than the other. Turning it 30% wouldn't do anything because it rotates and that worn part would end up engaging the bendix eventually anyways.

I removed the ring gear on mine quite easily, just use an acetylene torch and circle the ring gear applying heat to only the ring gear and it will eventually expand and just fall off (keep in mind there's a lip on one side of the gear so it can only fall off the one way, make sure you have it sitting the right way so gravity can do it's job). Let it cool down, put the hub in the freezer for a couple hours. Then heat the ring gear again, pull the hub out of the freezer quickly and drop the ring gear on again. No press needed, but I was told the hub would probably slip, so I would send it to #zero to get the ring gear pinned.

TBM makes the newer msd flywheels I believe, and they told me they use liquid nitrogen to install the ring gears and that I'd never be able to remove or install it the way I just posted, but I did it quite easily.

WELL I got the ring gear off the flywheel and looks like there is a very slight lip on the bottom side so it was a real bear to get off. I stacked dry ice on the flywheel and heated the steel ring gear while the whole thing was in the shop press. A little pressure and the gear came right off. Took a little bit of the lip with it but staking or pining the gear back on should take care of the lips job. Also i just got off the phone with MSD and they have no desire to sell or offer any type of replacement ring gears, but they would be glad to sell me a new one for $613. Jetinetics is looking into it and going to call me back. How ever in the meantime I may take the ring gear to a machine shop and see what it would cost to have one made. ;) I wander how many of you guys would be interested in a replacement ring gear if I had to have a batch made? Also what would people be willing to pay to fix there old msd total loss flywheel? Is it worth it?

You guys are playing with fire removing and reinstalling that ring gear.

I never ended up running it. When I explained to MSD that their $20 magnet and crap job of gluing it in cause damage to my starter, bendix, ring gear and $2300 cases they decided to warranty mine, so I reinstalled the ring gear and sent it back to them.

So jetinetics said they will replace mine if I send it to them. I think it would end up being around 250 after tax and shipping. But....... I had this extra 64x 760 flywheel that I thought I would donate to the cause. Heated the ring gear and it pressed off like butter. Measured the ring gear and it looks like all the dimensions are the same!! So I packed the msd flywheel in dry ice. And put the good 64x wheel in the toaster oven. After about 10 minutes I dropped the new ring on. It was still a bit to tight so I had to finish it with the press but it pressed on with little effort. Here are some pictures for all those how like pics. This may be a GOOD CHEAP alternative to fix all those msd flywheels. I may still look into having the ring gear staked or pinned.

I would certainly be interested in purchasing some replacement ring gears, especially if they are more than just surface hardened.

I don't understand the stock flywheel came apart like butter. But I never hear about any of them Spinning the ring gear. The 64x ring gear was heated in the oven till it was HOT, and the msd hub was stacked inside dry Ice (-109 degrees). And it still would not just drop on. I had to apply some pressure from the press to get it down. The interference fit is so tight I don't think it will slip but time will tell I will try to up date this with any news after I get it installed.
