Resin mix, Polyester and Epoxy...

So I made some footholds from Fiberglass mat and polyester resin. Now I want to strenghten it more. Thinking bout Epoxy resin and more fiber mat. Will the epoxy resin stick to the polyester resin?

yes, but why don't you use more polyester resin? either way the new layer will not be chemecly bonded since the first layer is allready dry.

I'm under the impression Epoxy resin cures stronger. I used polyester at the beginning cuz it was cheaper and I didn't know how it would turn out.. came out pretty good so now I want it stronger.

I hate to say it but I would start a new set and use epoxy resin from the start and scrap the poly resin holds.

I know it takes very little resin to make them and glass is cheep so do yourself a favor and use the first set as the prototype and learning experience.

I disagree completeley. Polyester is fine. If your using chop, epoxy resin will not relax it as it takes stireen to relax it and epoxy has none. If you make another set thicker I would just use polyester and more chop strand.

so just use poly resin for the 2nd/3rd layer?? I still want to stick with fiber cloth cuz it's easier to work with. How bout when I install in the hull, poly as well or epoxy?

yes, use polyester resin add your additional layers. it's best to add addtional layers while the first layer is still wet.

most poeple will tell you to use epoxy resin to install but if you have a round nose you can use polyester because the top deck of a round is fiberglass. if you don't have a roundnose you'll need epoxy resin if you plan on glassing in your holds.

All I can say it that every set of holds that have been popped out of my molds have been West Systems Epoxy Resin and I have never had a bad set over the years. I also use West Systems exclusively to install them with 404 filler for the first bond.

Use epoxy w/ filler to glue in and polyester or epoxy to lay strips of glass arround them once in. Again you can lay extra layers of polyester on set up polyester, but I would make sure you pat it down real well and make sure original surface if very clean.

you can use polyester to hold the holds to the ski if you grind all the way through the gelcoat to the glass on the ski (only on a roundie, since theyre polyester and squares are SMC). thats alotta grinding. if youre only going to rought up the gelcoat on the ski, id still use epoxy, as itll adhere to the gelcoat better.

theres no reason to make holds out of epoxy.

It's going to be on a SJ squarenose and my buddy's gonna put his on a Kawasaki 650sx.... What's best for mines? my buddy's?

i made a subwoofer box for my car out of polyester resin. i think it ended up being made out of 6-8 layers of 1.5 oz mat and i hardly applied the next layer while it was wet. it turned out great. i have over 700 watts going to the sub . when i was done i was able to jump on and off of it no problems.

polyester is fine for the holds. just use the epoxy to attatch them to the hull

poly resin cracks, epoxy resin wont crack, its a lot stronger, good fibergalss repair shops always use epoxy to repair
