Other Riding after a hip replacement?

I am 32 and need a hip replacement that will happen this june. Long story short my right hip is so f'd its bone spurs and bone on bone. My doc/surgeon cant believe it.

Waisted 2 seasons barely riding while also trying to tune a new driveline. It's hard to do that when you can barely get off your knees.

They dont know what free ride jet skiing is or how hard we ride, and I have never even attempted a flip or roll.

Has anyone gone through this and kept riding? Because I think I might be done.

I would prefer not to be, but seeing as I can barely walk and extreme activity is not included in the post-op description it may be time to say goodbye and buy a 22 pachanga
or some other 20 ft boat to be an ass on

I have had both hips replaced. 58 still riding. I don't ride surf much like I used to. stay in flat water and you should be fine. I try to take it easy but it is hard. Keep in mind you have a prosthetic inside your body. Better be nice to it.

Thata great to hear. How long till you were back on the water after surgery? I take it you didnt have both done at once right?

I had them done about two years apart. I think I waited about 6 months. You want to make sure the hip is attached well and that the bone has grown in and around it. I never discussed it with my surgeon because he wouldn't understand it. I go when I want but I don't ride back to back days. I try to take it easy while on the water but it is very hard to. I ride bouys a lot and that is still a blast.

I am sorry to bombard you with questions. When you got back on a ski were you nervous about damaging your new joint? Could you feel if you were pushing it too hard or not. Or, in the other hand were you feeling good and just took it easy knowing your situation and never felt like you stressed it?

Keep the questions coming. I had one done 4 years ago and the other 2 years ago. I was worried a bit, but just wanted to ride. They aren't perfect, ( much better, less pain), but I spoke to a guy who races MX and he rides with 2 fake hips. I rode at the Daytona Freeride last year, because the ocean was pretty flat. It was ugly this year so I decided not to. It is probably not the best for it, but I love riding and it is what it is. I thought I hurt one of them once, but the pain and stress went away. If it improves your quality of life just do it. Both of mine were outpatient and I was back on my couch the same day. Rehab is a must. My second one I was doing laps in my backyard the second day. Don't baby it. You need the keep the flexibility and build strength right away. Its not easy but by 30 days you will be feeling really good. Then rehab it a lot and go ride in 6 months.

My doc says the longer I wait the worse my other hip will get because of favoring it. Did you favor your new hip after the first surgery?

How do you feel about surf riding if you dont jump waves? I actually prefer to just ride waves and wakes anyways. I am really hoping to at least do that style of riding again

Your probably favoring one or the other now. It takes a while to get used to the new one but the pain goes away instantly. I just play on the waves and try not to launch the ski too high. It can't be good to use your new hip as a shock absorber. If I get too high I just bail. But I am happy playing in the waves slashing re entry's. I am just happy to be able to ride. I would assume if you land wrong you could do damage to the new hip. Your young enough if you want a new one every 5 years.

You have to be a little cautious once you get it done.

Does it feel like there is plastic and metal where bone and cartilage used to be? Or does it feel like it normally should where you walk and put weight on it and there is no pain?

Was there a progression from feeling something foreign in your body to not noticing?

It hurts and it is sore. They cut your femur in half. I had a reaction to the pain killers and was told to stop all pills after 3 days so I did it without meds. It was fine.

It is all numb. You don't feel the replacement at all. It works fine but your range of motion is gone because of the surgery and muscles. It is your job to get it back working but it feels natural.

MAKE sure you go to a surgeon who does the Anterior process and not the posterior. If they enter from the front or side, they don't cut the muscles. if they go in from behind they cut the muscles and recovery is much much longer.

As I said both of mine were outpatient. Surgery at 9 in the car by 3. Its incredible. Therapist was at the house the next day already doing exercise. You want to do the therapy. It works and you don't have anything else to do but do it for 10 minutes twice a day. Im in sales and went back to my office in 10 days. On an airplane in 28 days. 2 years later, I barely have a scar.

GET ER DONE!!!

One last question, I swear!

My job is 50/50 computer work/shop floor which involves lifting parts that weigh 50 pounds. They are cool with me on light duty in order to get back asap. Question is, how long do you think I should wait before lifting, crawling under machines, etc.

Thank you 6501

Thats up to you and your therapist. Your a young guy, but probably 2 months? Remember you are having major surgery. You have to do the re-hab, but you don't want to over do it. Get it done and then you can move past all of this. Keep the questions coming

I think getting out on a lake or river and just riding your ski is good rehab! I had THA- both, anterior approach, just a 4" cut through "bikini line"- no muscles there.
10 days after the second one, I was riding ( like an old geezer- 'cause that's what I am) on a lake, loading , unloading, beaching by myself. There was no pain!
Should you have the lateral approach done (through the side), you'd be in for a long rehab!!!! Can't even cross your legs while sleeping, implant might pop out of the acetabular cup- no skiing for quite awhile

I will definitely make sure they do the quick recovery way (if possible). If they say that can't I'll get a second opinion. I have no desire to be out of work and not be able to do anything for months and months
