Riva Bolts on Ada Head

riva hardware blows monkey ass. if you have ada hardware , use it.

while the concept behind rivas hardware seems very logical, THEY SNAP.

Thanks
I gathered from the "True Girdle Kit" thread that people have a problem with the bolts snapping. Bolts seam easier to deal with than studs and they look more sano. I don't have any complaints with my ADA head.
Are studs generally more stout than bolts?

I like the ADA set up as well. The only thing I would like to change is removing the acorn nuts and replacing them with 2 jam nuts. I think those are less apt to work their way loose over time. Still need to retorque them every few operating hours just to be safe.

Hunter,
I only need to recheck the torque on ADA girdle studded heads only once after break-in and mostly don't need it, and never need retorqing after that...you must not be using enough ft-lbs the first time. 22 ft-lbs on the stock 8mm yamaha bolts and at least 30 ft-lbs on the 10mm studs on lower compression motors and more that that on high compression motors.

Thanks

Only sflsurfrider, he also mentions a "three piece design" made by Riva, I have no idea what he is talking about. Pro-tec is the only three piece design that I know of. Riva may have produced one years ago, possibly what he has had trouble with. I have yet to snap a 10mm bolt, in fact, if your snapping these 10mm bolts, guessing your having aother issues.

The item spoke about in the other thread use's a two piece threaded stand-off/stud that screws into the case and long bolt that comes down thru the head. pro-tec had a three piece set-up that had a bracket that mounted on the head and bolt then went thru that.

Again, the thread does not mention Riva hardware, nor a three piece design as you mention. Your the only one posting this information. Please explain what you used that snapped multiple times.

riva has produced both 2pc and 3pc girdle hardware.

ive had more problems with the 2pc than the 3pc.

the lower parts kept snapping flush at the case.

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like they had some trash parts getting out. The ones I have always used were made by Pro-Design, he actually machines the parts in-house. I have yet to have an issue, but things do happen. Looks like I'm lucky to have not used the Riva hardware!

It was a good idea when several suppliers went to 10mm from 8 for the long girdle studs/socket head cap screws. unfortunately they drilled the holes to deeply, weakening the stud right at the clamping area - see the drawing. This caused a lot of major engine failures!

That is the hardware I am using, I thought they bored pretty deep considering the thread ends a quarter inch before the bottom. Major engine failure, that doesn't sound good.

This is an old kit obviously made by a machinist. The holes are not cut to deeply. Long capscrews seem to be made of 416 ss. I don't know who sold this.

I would say those are pretty stout. I think I will be ok with my mild setup, B-pipe and running 185 psi domes. I hope my 25ft/lbs is plenty on my cylinder bolts, I would have to pull the stock exhaust system to get to them again.

I have this riva girdle kit and it just caused engine failure. Four of the studs broke at the weakest point displayed in the drawing by AUGUSTAF while riding. The cylinders seperated from the cases and filled with water and scoring my cylinders. Now riva is not offering a replacement. Does any one know where to get or who is making replacement studs that are quality, not looking for the ADA? The reason I do not want ADA is because you break the seal between the cylinders and the cases if you remove the head.
Any input would be appreciated.

are you using gaskets for cylinder-- ive removed my ada heads many times and never had any cylinder sealing problems afterwards--i only use oem yamaha gaskets from RIVA---ha ha--i think the ada head rocks-- stone simple girdle and less hardware to mess with/drop in hull
