RMZ 450 project

picked up an 05 rmz 450 for 750$ last night...

the first guy that owned it couldnt ride..his friend i got it from said he rode around in circles in their campsite when they went riding and it shows as there is almost zero paint worn off the side covers...

unfortunately he was as good of a mechanic as he was a rider...he needlessly removed the cam covers to adjust the timing chain and didnt tighten one of the covers when he put it back together...the guy i got it from bought it from him and rode it for a few minutes before he realized something was wrong....the surface the cam rides on is kinda chewed up so im gonna go through the whole bike and get it dialed...i figure for that price i cant go wrong..

prob hasn't been washed ever so im gonna go and regrease all the bearings and get it fresh again...

rmz450 project

im doing a 05 rmz450 .they say the 06 head is better and fits on with no mods so if you have no luck with fixing the 05 head look four a 06 they say the cams get more oil.good deal you got there

almost done just need to clean carb and drop motor in and mount some fresh rubber...kept the project under 2500$..could have bought one running for that but i know this thing is fresh and i went through every single bolt..

this thing was so filthy...looked like the kid lubed the chain and oiled the filter with 10w50 and parked it at the beach...so nasty..the soda blaster was my friend...cleaned up pretty nice. got rid of the donkey dick 05-07 front fender and modified the 08+ fender to work and put 07 shrouds cause the 05 ones are gay....looks a little better...put pro circuit pegs, dr d pipe and revalved the suspension, 10mm lowered subframe, new chain and sprockets and kept the rest stock..its going to be a huge change coming off a 125..

You might want to check the timing or maybe put a new timing chain in. I fought my 250 for a year and finally bought a cam chain and it started a lot more consistent because my old timing chain was clapped out.

You can try a Denso IU24, I used the same plug in my Kitaco 124cc for my 50 - Sweet plug.

Here is another Ebay link for a NGK RMZ 450 05 plug.

Sweet Ride man!

The pilot jet can get clogged easy. You can use a $3 can of carb cleaner and small needles to try and clean it out or you should just replace the pilot jet with a new one for $9 to be sure.

plug ended up only costing 15$ i guess ngk started making the plugs for retail instead of just for suzuki a year or two ago. also my float needle was stuck. rode all weekend and the bike ran great. i did replace the timing chain when the top end was done w/ stainless valves

Sweet, Glad to hear! Sorry to bring up the chain, I just learned the hard way so I thought I'd mention it. I saw the photo afterwards and the cams looked like they in the right position in the photo, my bad. Sounds like you have it figured out. I am sure it is a big jump from a 125. Have a good one, nice ride!
