Heading to Galveston? Beware road work

People planning to use Interstate 45 to get to Galveston Island and other coastal areas this weekend could find slow going because of late-night and early-morning hour closures at NASA Parkway, officials said.

Commonly called the Gulf Freeway, I-45's northbound and southbound lanes will be closed at NASA Parkway from 9 p.m. Friday until noon Saturday and from 9 p.m. Saturday until noon Sunday, said Norm Wigington, a Texas Department of Transportation spokesman.

Crews are building a new interchange at NASA Parkway that eventually will move traffic to and from I-45 onto NASA Parkway on ramps free of traffic signals, Wigington said.

In addition to the NASA Parkway closures, the causeway that connects Galveston Island to mainland Galveston County is scheduled to close from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday. That closure is set so crews building the second half of a new causeway can use explosives to remove some of the old structure, Wigington said.

During both nighttime and morning I-45 closures at NASA Parkway, motorists will be able to use adjacent feeder roads to by-pass the construction areas, Wigington said.

But motorists may find it more convenient to use Highways 3, 146 or 288 to get to coastal areas during the Gulf Freeway closures, he said.

The timing of Sunday's causeway closure could be altered if any protected sea turtles or dolphins are spotted near the demolition area, Wigington said. The area must be clear of such creatures for an hour before the demolition can take place, he said.
