I wanted to post my experience with Sekssuperjet, so at least others can interpret it for themselves. Some may view this differently or not a big deal. I would have appreciated knowing this info.
Summary – From my point of view the seller sold the ski out from under me after I was pretty darn confident he considered it sold to me. Let's just say I am very glad I was not available to drive down to pick it up and had to arrange shipping instead. It would have been a huge deal if I ended up driving over 500 miles one way to find the seller sold to someone else in the meantime.
I cant fault the seller for wanting to sell quickly, but I kept asking what I needed to do to prove I was serious about this purchase and to lock down the purchase. And the way I interpreted responses were, no I don’t need anything from you, I trust you to follow through with the deal. If I would have known the seller would act in the way he did, I would have approached the sale differently or not at all. Being far away from a ski being purchased already has its risks, however we usually require some level confidence the ski is "ours" so we can proceed and pickup method - whether it be a shipper or ourselves driving down.
Again I am not saying the seller purposely misled me, however I interpreted the interactions apparently quite a bit differently than the seller. I already had a shipper lined up for the next day and I was just waiting for confirmation from the seller that the ski would be available for pickup at a specific time and how he would want payment. When the other buyer came into the picture I would have at least liked the opportunity to complete the transaction as we were arranging. I mean it is a tricky situation when you need to sell fast, but if the roles were reversed, I would have made the 2nd interested party next in line in the event the shipper for the first buyer flaked during the time frame promised. I mean I would have fully understood. He would have stated he wanted to sell fast and he didnt want to risk the sale dragging out - I missed my shot. The 2nd interested party would have still been interested. We are talking are talking the next day.
Here is a just of the conversation.
(5:07pm) Was looking at it previously. Suddenly huge price drop. Saw it, I texted right away saying I was interested but I would need to have it shipped. He texted back soon asking whether he could call. He asked if we could call.
(5:19pm – call lasted 25min) We chatted, I was sold. I asked about needing a deposit, and how payments should be made. Also I was going to set up shipment. He said the ski was at his mechanic with a blown Bendix. Okay cool keep me posted. I will keep you up to date with shipper info.
We text back and forth about me getting the uship set up
(6:49pm) I fill him in with a Uship bid I immediately get. I ask about dates pickup would work.
(6:52pm) He responds with “I just want it done as soon as possible. I don’t want someone else to come in meantime and want to buy the ski. The soonest date you can get the better”.
Me (6:54p,) – “Do you want a deposit to show my intent?”
Sekssuperjet (6:55pm) – “That’s not necessary. Just get a date picked as soon as you can next week”
Me (6:57ish)– Reply right back saying I sent a note to the shipper I received a bid from asking for the soonest he can pickup. And some other stuff about finalizing dates.
Me (7:06pm)- Ask whether he could send me some pics and movie of it starting since he said it just had the Bendix problem. I said the pics would not change my mind on going though, I just wanted something to look at.
Sekssuperjet (7:09pm) – “Okay it’s still at my mechanics but I will get it sometime soon.”
Me (7:14pm) – “Okay cool. And I got a response from the one shipper I have. He said it could pick it up as soon as we would want, but it might not immediately head up to me as it would want to book other stuff my way. I think that works. Again if nothing pops up soon. Guy seems to be on top of things.”
Sekssuperjet (7:30pm) – “Okay sounds good”
Me (7:22 am to 10:46am) – Following up about when the soonest the ski would be available to be picked up since the last I heard it was still at the mechanic. Asking about Sunday pickup – I have two different shippers asking about picking it up on Sunday. Also talk a little more about payment methods. “Also, please let me know if you would like a deposit to consider this ski sold”. I also ask whether he would want to consider a tiered deposit system just in case the shipping dragged out. I wanted some means for him to have increased confidence in my following through with the shipper picking up ASAP.
Sekssuperjet (11:02 am) - “Okay let me think of how I want to do this and I will let you know”
Me (11:52am) – “Okay got a guy would be available to pick up tomorrow around noon. Good price. I just need to know if the ski will be ready and you want to proceed.”
Sekssuperjet (12:18am) – “Hey man, someone just called me and is going to buy this ski in Nashville. Consider it sold. Sorry”
Me – “Glad I didn’t get my hopes up Cant save im a little peeved that I kept asking what I needed to do to “consider it sold” and nothing was required”
Sekssuperjet – “Well that’s why I didn’t want a deposit. I just wanted to sell it as quick as possible”.
