Super Jet shimming issue please help :/

So I am at the point where I trying to shim my motor and just cannot get all of the teeth of both couplers to line up.

The motor is in with bolts to hold it in place (loosely) pushed all the way back. The first thing I notice is that the tooth on top that is connected to the midshaft is about 1 mm higher than the coupler on the motor. So I shim the motor with a 1mm shim on each mount. Now the tooth on top attached to the midshaft is just about even with the coupler on the motor.

I spin the coupler around to the next tooth and it's too high again, as if I need to shim the motor more. If you look at the two teeth that are now on the side they are off as well.

I watched the wamaltons video online on how to shim the motor and they make it look super simple. I just do not understand what I am doing wrong. If i can get everything mostly even will it be ok? Or am I going to end up blowing out my midshaft housing because I cant get all the teeth to perfectly line up?

Please bestow upon me your knowledge oh great X and help me get the freshly rebuilt turd on the water this season.

Thanks,

Shane

Did you correctly shim the pump and midshaft first of all?

It seems odd that spinning the midshaft coupler 1/3 of a turn gives differing alignment results... if that is actually the case something else is wrong.

I aligned the pump when I replaced the midshaft last year so I know that that is good.

The midshaft is a cold fusions shaft with only one season on it so I do not think that the shaft is bent. I wonder if the midshaft is not pressed far enough out, because when I push the motor back all the way there is a good 2mm gap.

I will try to post photos later if I get a chance.

2mm gap is fine. From walmintons they said 2-6mm without the rubber dampener. Are you sure your couplers are exactly the same. My friend had to different sizes once confused the poop out of me until someone pointed it out

They should be the same. I swapped motors between two 94's that had stock couplers. I am going to pull the midshaft housing tonight when i get home just to double check to make sure my pump is shimmed properly because thinking about it if that is not properly shimmed then upon rotation it could put pressure on the midshaft and cause it to go all wonky or be misaligned right?

If you spin the engine around one full revolution, are the couplers in the same place as where you started? If they are still aligned, but go out of alignment everywhere else in the revolution, then something is bent...

So I pulled the midshaft housing to check my pump alignment and it looks pretty good to me.

I shimmed the front with 2mm and the rear with 1.5 and got everything to line up finally. Water testing next week to find out just how good of a job I did.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help!
