Shipping a Motor

I have an SXR motor I am shipping, and recently, @jo5hi3 and I had a big issue with UPS, and it really left a bad taste in my mouth. We completely "over" packed the box. I dont need me crammed it full, I mean we fool proofed it as best we could. But regardless....life goes on.

What is the best method that you guys use to ship a motor? I really liked in the past when I got a motor that was put in a garbage bag or two, and then spray foamed into the box. How many cans of spray foam do I need?

Is there a better method?

Thanks guys!

If you ship UPS, make sure its a plywood crate with a 2x4 structure. I bought a high dollar motor from a member here and UPS threw it off a truck. Luckily it was package nice and the motor was fine but the package was shot.

Not sure if you were planing on using the common hardware store spray foam but whatever you do don't use "grate stuff" spray foam. For one its not dense enough and two, air is its catalysis. If you try to make anything more than approx 4" thick the inside will remain goo. There are many foams designed to be a "foam in place" shipping foam. hit up google

I tried this with USPS but they cut them off before putting postage on my box. They said it could catch and jam up the conveyors. Other shipping c's may allow them?

Spray a little bit. wait. spray some more. wait.............................. get the picture........... You do not have to order special shipping foam.

Have you shipped a motor using it? I have. Its not dense enough, and layer foam makes air pockets. but thank you

I sent my motor to texas in a rubbermaid extra tuff tub with the top zip tied on with about 70-80 zip ties but inside I layered foam insulation and bubble wrap until I could barely close the top. shipped just fine. I stenciled fragile on the side of it too..

use fedex.they seem to be a bit more gentle than brown.foam or pack the crap out of it but a wooden crate is best option.
