Shortened my RN and...

WOWWWWW.!!!! What a difference!!
I had a crack on the rear right corner of the hull from rolling in the surf on an unreinforced ski (although I don't believe anyone reinforces the rear corner regardless). SoI had the entire engine comparment reinforced and decided to take nearly 5" off the back at the same time.
Kept the stock ride plate on. The ski handles amazing. I had destroyer tubbies added at the same time. You can literally turn on a dime or carve corners as hard as you want. SUPER playful now. Everyone who rode the ski has been blown away. Every Superjet should ride like this. It almost feels like anA/M hull. Only time you noticed its shortened is at slow speed before you plane off it will ride a LITTLE more nose high. I highly recommend this mod. Here's some pics

Nice. I just shortened mine 4 inches and got to ride it for the first time yesterday. Totally different ski. I agree with what you said. Super tight turns makes for a really playful and responsive hull. Excited to get it in some bigger surf and really see how it handles!

For sure. My 2014 goal is to back flip, with no trim. It definitely feels doable. Hopefully i'll pop my cherry before or during Daytona :)

Haha. I'm in the exact same boat. Agreed... Definitely doable. I just need to sack up! Hoping to pop the cherry next week as well. I'll keep an eye out for your ski in daytona. I'll have the orange and black SN with RN pole. Good luck!

looks good! im am taking 2.5 off mine right now as well ...all the cool kids are doing it. Curious if there was a reason you didn't trim the bond rail down in the back? Are you planning on leaving the ride plate long for pump protection in surf?

I really think, for a rec or surf boat, keeping the rear bondline and topdeck full length is the ticket. I have ridden my -4 hull with full length topdeck and a -4 hull with the tray and gunwales cut down to match back to back and there is a huge difference. The extra tray obviously is more comfortable but makes for a less extreme feel, not as nose high at low speeds but short hull handling on plane.

Try a shortened rideplate as well, you will probably like it.

I agree ! I was told to cut the top deck to match but honestly it rides like a dream so why should I mess with it

I have a few questions...

I had no idea people kept the top deck when they cut their superjets down. Now when you ride do you stand different?

Anybody want to talk a little more on the differences between cutting the top and bottom decks and just the bottom?

How is your pole cut? When you cut only the bottom do you leave the pole alone or cut less?

Even a stock length hull needs a shorter handpole, it depends on your height and what you are comfortable on but you will probably want 4"-6" off your handpole.
If you cut the topdeck down, you will definitely have your feet in a different place than you would if you had not. That's really the wrong way to think about it though, foot placement should come natural, if you are thinking about where to put your feet, you are doing it wrong.

I forgot!
I section 4" out of my tray top deck to move my foothold forward. My bottom deck is -8 or 9". My top deck is a bit longer but not much. The shorter the hull the more forward you will want your stance. This will keep the pump in the water and the nose planted at higher speeds. If not you may find it harder to plane out the ski and a lot more porpoising at high speeds. Rider weight and height play a huge roll in where to setup one's stance. Hence adjustable poles and footholds.

Was seeing if there were exceptions for bottom deck only cut. I think about riding 20x more than I ride and I try to get in 3 days a week. Trust me my feet are all over the damn place!

i have a 1997 sj and i am thinking about doing this in the future. my question is how do you shape the back of the ski? i was told that you take the peace you cut off and re glass it but 4-7 inches shorter.

I did not reuse the cut off ends. You could though. It's pretty straight forward once you start the process
