I am going through the process of building a new house. I am now working on plans for a shop / garage.
Take this advantage to show off your shop / garage set up and help me decide how I want to build mine any do's and dont's will be greatly appreciated.

I bid a shouse for a guy a month or so ago. It was nice. 50x50 with 13ft sidewalls on the shop downstairs and a full 2500 sqft 3 bdrm 2 bath house up top. I was a little jealous until I realized that the guy is going to be going up and down stairs for the rest of his life.

No doubt about the stairs but I want my shop to be disconnected from my house. That way my wife and kids have their area and I have mine.

I was thinking of putting in a wood stove or barrel stove for winter time. A urinal even if there is no room for a bathroom. Maybe a used bathroom stall or something men's room like.

Maybe some plywood for a stall and and an old door for the stall door.

If I was a single man I would live in a tiny house with a huge shop or a shop with a loft. But I have a Wife and 2 kids that need a space to live and I don't want them in my shop every day. any one have pictures of what you have or what you would build if you could ?

A shop garage with toy hauler full hookup...

I suppose the office or whatever idea is neat, but if buying a house, selecting something with enough lot to park a tt / rv / toy hauler is a good option. My parking spot in my yard is right next to whee my sewer runs, and thee is a cleanout there. Water, 30amp and raise the cleanout to grojnd level at the fence. Easy full hookup, detached man cave with all the ammenities, then take it with you to the freeride.

I build mine a few yrs ago, radiant floors both levels, party room upstairs, don't forget smoke eaters, got 2 out of my local legion, they work awesome when the partiers drop by and connected to the house but through a breezeway. Its winter so the garage is a "gong show" right now

I don't have any pics of my compound handy, but I would highly recommend 2x6 exterior walls and insulate with r19. This makes it easier to work late into the night by holding in the noise if you have neighbors, as well as letting you heat it with a candle and cool it with an ice cube. Also, my opinion is that radiant floor heat is over-rated unless you're going to be out there every day and night to enjoy the added cost and operating expense. Electric Infrared space heaters work wonders. I do recommend putting down a layer of r-board before pouring the concrete. This breaks the bond to the earth and lets the floor hold heat and cold better and prevents the concrete from sweating during humid weather. That's my .02 for now.

I went with the radiant cuz I got all the pex for free and a boiler for $100 and I'm out here all the time what with Idol, the bachelor and all those other stupid shows, its basically my living room and being in the trade got everything from jobsites, drywall, lights, shower, cabinets, sinks, kitchen, workbenches, copper piping for the manifold(heating) everything, I did buy the urinal new though lol.

Forget the r19, spray foam seals everything up better. At least do the top of the tin on the ceiling, that's where 90% of your heat goes.
